2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodville finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Woodville finished seventh in Class 1A region seven with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023. Woodville struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.0 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Woodville football program has struggled with a record of 34-100. Over the past 17 seasons, Woodville has not won much with a record of 36-138. Their 21.0% winning percentage ranks 59th in Class 1A and 385th in the AHSAA. The Panthers have struggled on the football field with no winning seasons during this time. The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Joel Poole as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Poole is entering his 18th season as a head coach and 34th in coaching. He was the head coach at DAR from 2017-20 before spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at North Jackson. Over the course of his career, Coach Poole's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won one region championship. First year skipper Joel Poole brings a wealth of experience to the Panther program. Pooles head coaching experience began at Pleasant Valley followed by a stint with Madison County then a tour with Albertville as well as D.A.R. Woodville hopes for a return to the playoffs revolve around his eight seniors including all-region honorees Sam Peek and Ace Weaver. Peek is looking to regain his dual-threat form (QB/DB) after suffering a late season ending injury while Weaver led Jackson County in rushing with 1,116 yards. Junior Steve Williams will be the anchor on the OL/DL. The tail end of the Panthers 1A, Region 7 schedule include heavy hitters Decatur Heritage (A), Valley Head (H), and Coosa Christian (A). This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. The Panthers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Whitesburg Christian on Friday, August 25 at Frazier Field. Last year the Whitesburg Christian Warriors finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 2A region seven. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over Tharptown by a score of 49-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Woodville and Whitesburg Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-1-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2022 with Whitesburg Christian winning by a score of 47-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
