2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Carver completed the 2023 season with a 7-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region two, the Wolverines earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Carver's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Briarwood by a score of 25-0. Since 2010, Carver has gone a combined 98-60. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 7A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Carver has managed to compile a record of 157-123. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 7A and 152nd in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Carver lost 6A All-State receiver Laquenton Underwood to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. Coaching Change: Marcus Gardner was relieved of his coaching duties at Carver after just three seasons leading the football program in Montgomery. His three squads were successful posting a 20-12 record and reached the playoffs each season. Carver will be consolidating with Sidney Lanier prior to the next football season in 2024 so much is expected of the team in 2024. 2024 Head Coach: Bobby Carr is one of the winningest head coaches in the state having a record of 250-52 in twenty-five seasons as a head football coach in the AISA. His teams have won ten state championships and all but two have qualified for the playoffs. His previous stops were at New Life Christian, Edgewood Academy and Autauga Academy. He spent last season as the offensive coordinator at Elberta. His 254 wins rank 11th among active coaches in the AHSAA. The win total includes 250 wins in Alabama and 4 victories from outside the state. Over the course of his career, Coach Carr's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-three times and won sixteen region championships. He has a 45-10 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Carr won twelve state championships prior to arriving at Carver, the last coming in 2021 at Autauga Academy. Season Outlook: The Carver Wolverines will play in Class 7A region two during the 2024 season. The Wolverines move up in classification to Class 7A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. This is not your old Carver Wolverine team. This squad could be the team that shocks the state in 2024. Talent is everywhere at the skilled positions with the returning starters and the transfers over from Lanier. With the addition of Anthony Rogers in the backfield the only question on offense will be along the line of scrimmage. If Coach Carr can fill those spots successfully the Wolverines will be in the playoffs in what could be the toughest region in the state. Coach Carr tells us he has six starters returning on offense and another six on defense but with the addition of the players from Lanier they should have an entire lineup of starters back or very close to it. This team will be stacked make no mistake about it. The only question will be can Coach Carr bring them together as a team? If so they will be a force to be reckoned with in 7A. Coach Carr told us ''Carver and Lanier high schools have merged. We have 17 players with Division 1 offers.'' The Wolverines could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Unfortunately, Carver finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any chance at the postseason. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Terrell Russell Jr. will be returning after completing 143-of-267 passes for 2,420 yards and 25 TDs last season. RB Trey Berry will be at Carver for his senior season after rushing for 1,252 yards and 7 TDs last season for Lanier. RB Anthony Rogers will be a great addition at Carver from IMG. RB Jimmy King, moving over from Lanier also after rushing for 901 yards and 6 TDs last season. WR Tristan Norman will also be back after catching 44 passes for 736 yards and scoring 10 TDs. MLB Donjavian Brown collected 131 tackles (90 solo) and will be back for his senior season. Also from Lanier will be MLB Kendarius Reynolds (138 tackles) and Jamares Harris (102 tackles) as sophomores. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: QB- TJ Russell, WR- TK Norman, OT- Tremayne Chapman, WR- Ni'King Patterson, WR- CJ Cargill, OT- LaRodney McQueen DEFENSE: LB- Donjavian Brown, LB- Noah Maye, LB- Stephon Andrews, DT- Rashad Walker, DB- Corey McMeans, SB- Camare Jackson NEWCOMERS: RB- Anthony Rogers, RB- Tre Berry, LB- Jimmy King, DB- Kendarius Reynolds, DE- Jamares Harris, DB/WR- Greg Tate Season Opener: The Wolverines open the 2024 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent Vestavia Hills on Friday, August 23 at Cramton Bowl. Last year the Vestavia Hills Rebels finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in third place in Class 7A region three. The Rebels lost in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs to Thompson by a score of 34-14. Carver and Vestavia Hills have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Wolverines have a 2-1-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 1981 with Carver winning by a score of 22-21. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
