2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Central finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Central finished eighth in Class 2A region four with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Cougars won as many games as in any season since 2016. The Cougars last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Central struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 41.7 points a game. The Cougars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, the Central football program has struggled with a record of 28-109. Over the past 25 seasons, Central has not won much with a record of 70-180. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 2A and 359th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Shundell Russaw exits Central Coosa after just two seasons with a record of 4-16. 2024 Head Coach: Daniel Flowers arrives at Central Coosa with nine years of head coaching experience at Southside Selma and Wenonah. Over the course of his career, Coach Flowers' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . Season Outlook: The Central Cougars will play in Class 2A region four during the 2024 season. The Cougars have not reached the playoffs since 2015 but have a better shot this season with the realignment of region 4. Only two current teams this season qualified for the playoffs in 2023. That alone will give them a better chance. The Cougars will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. Season Opener: The Cougars open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Sylacauga on Friday, August 23 at Central Stadium. Last year the Sylacauga Aggies finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 5A region four. The Aggies ended last season on a positive note with a win over Piedmont by a score of 32-31 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Central and Sylacauga have met a total of 21 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 4-17-0 record against the Aggies. They last met in 2009 with Sylacauga winning by a score of 41-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
