 2024 Preview

Cherokee County completed the 2023 season with a 13-2 record. Last year Cherokee County captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Warriors won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 4A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Catholic Montgomery at the Alabama Super Seven 35-0 in Birmingham.

The Warriors won as many games as in any season since 2009.

The high-scoring Cherokee County offense ranked 24th in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.4 points a game.

The Warriors defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 23rd in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 12.7 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Warriors have Finished 25-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Cherokee County has gone a combined 90-71. Their 55.9% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Cherokee County has managed to compile a record of 172-119. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 4A and 93rd in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Cherokee County lost 4A All-State  running back Jacob Cornejo to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates offensive lineman Zack Gaylor and defensive back Jace Turner.

Head Coach:
The Warriors are led by head coach Jacob Kelley who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 45-17 over the past five seasons at Cherokee County. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Kelley.

Season Outlook:

The Cherokee County Warriors will play in Class 4A region six during the 2024 season.

The Warriors enter the 2024 season having won 6 straight region games.

The Warriors came up short of preseason expectations in 2023 as injuries at quarterback took its toll in the playoffs. Replacing a player like Jacob Cornejo is next to impossible as he was once in a generation type star. Carson Tittle will be back healthy at quarterback so that will be a plus for the Warriors in 2024.

Coach Kelley says he expects ''Keyshawn Woods to replace the 4A Back of the Year''. He also said ''TE Nate Black gained 20 lbs. in the offseason and has looked great and 6'-7'' offensive tackle Asa Holbert will replace all-state LT Zach Gaylor''.

Coach Kelley also told us ''The senior class is eight wins away from being the winningest group in program History. #BeAboutIt''.

The Warriors enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region six and could very well be representing the North in the Class 4A title game.

Players to Watch in 2024:
Junior DL Tae Diamond had 33 tackles for loss and 22 sacks last season.

Junior LB Tristan Brown collected 164 tackles, including 35 for a loss and 11 sacks last year.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: WR Ben Frampton, WR Carson Chesnut, WR Luke Young, QB Carson Tittle, OL Landon Ransum, OL Dylan Duncan, TE Ben Moseley, RB Keyshawn Woods, PK Ben Frampton
DEFENSE: DE Tae Diamond, DL Caleb Harbour, CB Tripp Davis, DL Asa Holbert, LB Tristan Brown, OLB Carson Chesnut, OLB Tyson Woods
NEWCOMERS: RB Keyshawn Woods, TE Nate Black, OT Asa Holbert

Season Opener:
The Warriors open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Piedmont on Friday, August 23 at Warriors Stadium/Johnson Field. Last year the Piedmont Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 5-7 and in third place in Class 3A region six. The Bulldogs lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Lauderdale County by a score of 35-30.

Cherokee County and Piedmont have met a total of 81 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 39-39-3 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2023 with Cherokee County winning by a score of 26-7.
