 2024 Preview 


       East Lawrence finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year East Lawrence finished seventh in Class 4A region seven with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Eagles have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2024.

       East Lawrence struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 44.4 points a game.

       The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the East Lawrence football program has struggled with a record of 36-105.

       Over the past 25 seasons, East Lawrence has not won much with a record of 57-195. Their 23.0% winning percentage ranks 62nd in Class 4A and 375th in the AHSAA. The Eagles have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time.

Head Coach:
       The Eagles are led by head coach Mac Hampton who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at East Lawrence. The Eagles saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach Hampton arrived. The Eagles have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hampton. Over the course of his career, Coach Hampton's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

Season Outlook:

       The East Lawrence Eagles will play in Class 4A region seven during the 2024 season.

      

       The Eagles have not reached the playoffs the past four seasons and will be working hard over the summer to make a return trip in 2024. Just four years ago the team won nine games but only won five the past three seasons since Coach Culver left the program.

       Region 7 is going to be tough for all the teams. With nine schools in the region and only four playoff spots available it will be intense come late October.

    This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      Cayne McClure as a freshman had 292 yards on 79 carries and scored 3 TDs. He also had 229 yards on 12 receptions and 7 more TDs. He will be back in 2024.

      Alex Newman with 10 tackles for loss, six being sacks also had two fumble recoveries and 39 tackles and will return this fall.

Season Opener:
       The Eagles open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Lawrence County on Friday, August 23 at Red Devil Stadium. Last year the Lawrence County Red Devils finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 5A region eight. The Red Devils lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Pleasant Grove by a score of 49-17.

       East Lawrence and Lawrence County have met a total of 39 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 15-24-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2017 with Lawrence County winning by a score of 58-7.
