 2024 Preview

Georgiana completed the 2023 season with a 10-2 record. With their 7-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region two, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Georgiana reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Leroy by a score of 27-13.

The defense was very stingy last season as Georgiana ranked 7th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 9.0 points a game.

Since 2010, Georgiana has gone a combined 85-69. Their 55.2% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Georgiana has managed to compile a record of 136-135. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 1A and 190th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Georgiana lost 1A All-State  linebacker Cam Miles to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating were teammates athlete Marques Payton and athlete Jacquese Abner.

Head Coach:
The Panthers are led by head coach Berry Bess who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 17-16 over the past three seasons at Georgiana. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Bess.

Season Outlook:

The Georgiana Panthers will play in Class 1A region two during the 2024 season.

Georgiana enters the 2024 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Harmond Field.

Coach Bess has taken the Panthers from 0-10 to 10-2 in two short years. They had a very solid team last year with the offense scoring 425 points and the defense only allowing 108. They played every game tough only losing to Elba and eventual state champions Leroy in the second round of the playoffs. At one point the defense pitched five shutouts in a row in the middle of the season.

These Panthers are for real and will be a force to reckon with in 1A south. They return eight starters on offense and six on defense so look for Georgiana to be around in the later playoff weeks in 2024.

Coach Bess told us ''Went from 0-10 in 2021, 7-4 in 2022 first round playoff loss. 10-2 in 2023 second round playoff loss. Hope to add to the playoff appearances of the past two years & make a deeper run. Region champion aspirations. The Juniors & Seniors have been playing together since they were 8th & 9th graders.''

The Panthers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: OL: Laquenton Burnette, Jamal Stallworth, DJ Lawson, Marctavious Crittenden, Deandre Mobley; HB: Fred Curry; WR: Quan Scott, Jalen Crenshaw, Kaveon Miles(2 Time HM All-State)
DEFENSE: DB: Kamari Miles, Bernard McCaster, Ledarrius Allen, Quan Scott, Kaveon Miles(2 Time HM All-State); LB: Fred Curry(1st Team All-State); DL: Jaden Stallworth
NEWCOMERS:Bernard McCaster at QB; Kamari Miles at RB; Chris Boyd at LB/HB

Season Opener:
The Panthers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Greenville on Thursday, August 22 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Greenville Tigers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 5A region two. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Russell County by a score of 75-43.

Georgiana and Greenville have met a total of 62 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 20-40-2 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2015 with Greenville winning by a score of 21-8.
