2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Greenville finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Greenville finished sixth in Class 5A region two with a 0-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Greenville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.5 points a game. The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, Greenville has gone a combined 86-71. Their 54.8% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Greenville has managed to compile a record of 145-132. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 5A and 172nd in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Tigers are led by head coach Garrick Pimienta who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Greenville. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Pimienta. Season Outlook: The Greenville Tigers will play in Class 5A region two during the 2024 season. The Tigers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 74-44 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 5A and 22nd in the AHSAA. Greenville will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. The Tigers enter the 2024 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. Back-to-back 1-9 seasons are not common in Greenville. The last time that happened was in 1970-71. The Tigers missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 2004-05 seasons. Second year head coach hopes an easier non-region schedule will produce a few more victories this year. Region 2 is tough to say the least with the likes of Andalusia Headland, Catholic and Eufaula in the mix for one of the four playoff spots. It may be a year or two for the Tigers to get back to being the Tigers of years gone by. This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. Unfortunately, Greenville plays in a region with the likes of Catholic Montgomery, Eufaula, Andalusia and Headland making it more difficult to claim one of the four playoff spots. The Tigers will need to find a way to upset one of those teams to have any chance at the post season. Season Opener: The Tigers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Georgiana on Thursday, August 22 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Georgiana Panthers finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 1A region two. The Panthers lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Leroy by a score of 27-13. Greenville and Georgiana have met a total of 62 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 40-21-1 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2015 with Greenville winning by a score of 21-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
