2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Headland completed the 2023 season with a 10-3 record. With their 3-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region two, the Rams earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Headland lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Gulf Shores team by a score of 35-14. No team at Headland ever won more games in a season than the ten victories last year. Since 2010, Headland has gone a combined 60-86. Their 41.1% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Headland has managed to compile a record of 92-166. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 48th in Class 5A and 318th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Headland lost 5A All-State athlete Caleb Dozier to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Head Coach: The Rams are led by head coach Reginald Melton who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-8 over the past two seasons at Headland. Under his direction the Rams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Melton. Season Outlook: The Headland Rams will play in Class 5A region two during the 2024 season. Headland will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. With the AHSAA realignment region 2 is crowded with six teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. This will make it difficult for a couple of the teams to grab one of the four spots come November. The Wildcats had one of the best teams in school history last year finishing with a record of 10-3. The ten victories ties the record for the most in history. Look for them to build upon that recent success in 2024. Graduation took it's toll on the defense as seven starters from last season graduated in the spring. The Rams will return six players to the offense including RB Marcus Reeves. Coach Melton will be counting on first year starter Ashton Trammell to lead the team from the quarterback position when the season opens. The Rams have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region two this season. Players to Watch in 2024: RB Marcus Reeves will be returning for his junior season after rushing for 842 yards and 2 TDs last season. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: RB- Marcus Reeves; OT- Tucker Hagler; OL- Brady Bennett; OL- Conner Clements; OT- William Bryan; JD Johnson DEFENSE: SS- Kameron Sconiers; FS- Julian Riley; DT- Sabastion Stanton; DT- Tay Davis NEWCOMERS: QB- Ashton Trammell; WR- Jayden Craig; WR- Hayden Gard Season Opener: The Rams open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Dale County on Friday, August 23 at Warrior Stadium. Last year the Dale County Warriors finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 4A region two. Headland and Dale County have met a total of 79 times on the football field. The Rams have a 43-35-1 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2021 with Headland winning by a score of 27-26. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
