 2024 Preview

Hokes Bluff completed the 2023 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region six, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Hokes Bluff's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Madison Academy by a score of 57-20.

It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Eagles qualified for the playoffs.

Since 2010, Hokes Bluff has gone a combined 72-80. Their 47.4% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Hokes Bluff has managed to compile a record of 159-121. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 4A and 102nd in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Eagles are led by head coach Michael Robertson who is entering his twenty-ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 179-133 over the past twenty-eight seasons at Hokes Bluff. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times. They have won one region crown with Coach Robertson. Coach Robertson led to a state championship in 2001. His 179 wins rank 23rd among active coaches in the AHSAA.

Season Outlook:

The Hokes Bluff Eagles will play in Class 4A region six during the 2024 season. The Eagles move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

The Eagles got back to the playoffs last year after a three year absence. They move back up to 4A after spending four years in 3A. They can wave goodbye to teams like Geraldine, Piedmont, Plainview and Sylvania and look forward to region games against the likes of Etowah, Anniston, Cherokee County and Oneonta.

The Eagles will play a rather difficult non-region schedule in 2024 with games against Southside Glencoe and Randolph County.

Hokes Bluff had a good summer with 64 players out this fall including twelve seniors. Coach Robertson said at media days they will return about five or six starters from last season on both sides of the football. The players have set a goal of playing a home playoff game in 2024.

The Eagles have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region six this season.

Players to Watch in 2024:
Sophomore QB Bryce Whitaker accounted for 1,656 all purpose yards last season.

Season Opener:
The Eagles open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Southside Gadsden on Thursday, August 29 at Mike Robertson Stadium. Last year the Southside Gadsden Panthers finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in first place in Class 5A region six. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Boaz by a score of 10-7.

Hokes Bluff and Southside Gadsden have met a total of 75 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 40-32-3 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2023 with Southside Gadsden winning by a score of 37-12.
