2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Lexington completed the 2023 season with a 7-5 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region eight, the Golden Bears earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Lexington reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Fyffe by a score of 57-24. The defense allowed a team record 364 points last season. Since 2010, Lexington has gone a combined 75-78. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Lexington has managed to compile a record of 139-135. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 2A and 186th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Lexington lost 2A All-State athlete Wyatt Prado to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate athlete Byron Lane. Head Coach: The Golden Bears are led by head coach Blake Killen who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-5 record in his first season at Lexington. Under his direction the Golden Bears have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Killen. Over the course of his career, Coach Killen's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . Season Outlook: The Lexington Golden Bears will play in Class 2A region eight during the 2024 season. The Golden Bears have reached the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. Region 8 will be a little tougher with the arrival of Decatur Heritage from 1A. Grabbing one of the four available playoff spots will be a battle for all the teams in what will be a very competitive region all season long. Lexington will return six starters from last year to the offense and seven on defense. The talent will be there for the Golden Bears to have another winning season and a return trip to the post season in 2024. Coach Killen told us ''We will be experienced along the offensive and defensive lines and in the secondary. We will be very young at the offensive skill positions. We have a really good quarterback returning but have to figure out the pieces around him.'' The Golden Bears are considered one of the favorites for the region eight championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: QB- Brody Killen, WR- Noah LeMay, WR- Will White, Center- Parker Cole, Guard- Landon Ingram, Tackle- Cole Tackle DEFENSE: DE- Lane Matthews, Nose- Parker Cole, LB- Jake Lard, LB- Tanner Nesbitt, CB- Tate Gamble, CB- Landon Carlock, FS- Noah LeMay NEWCOMERS: Slot-back Sawyer Howard Season Opener: The Golden Bears open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Lauderdale County on Friday, August 23 at McMeans Stadium. Last year the Lauderdale County Tigers finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 3A region eight. The Tigers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 3A playoffs to Geraldine by a score of 55-20. Lexington and Lauderdale County have met a total of 76 times on the football field. The Golden Bears have a 21-53-2 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2023 with Lauderdale County winning by a score of 41-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
