2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Orange Beach finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-8 record. Last year Orange Beach finished seventh in Class 4A region one with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Makos have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2024. The Makos hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 8-3 record in 2022. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Orange Beach averaged scoring just 12.8 points a game. Orange Beach is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only four seasons. They have managed a record of 21-19 over the past four years. Coaching Change: Jamey DuBose Leaves Orange Beach after just two seasons with a 9-11 record. His overall record in Alabama is 146-51 with a trio of state championships at Central Phenix City (2018) and Prattville (2008 & 2011). DuBose accepted a head coaching position at Biloxi MS in December. 2024 Head Coach: Wade Waldrop was not retained as the head football coach at Hoover after just two seasons leading the Bucs program. His two seasons produced a record of 16-9 which was not acceptable under Hoover standards. His career has spanned eighteen seasons at Chelsea, James Clemens and Florence with a record of 116-84 and 7-13 in the playoffs. New facilities being built is always a draw for any new coaching hire. Look for bigger and better things from Orange Beach in the future. His 116 wins rank 53rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Waldrop's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times and won four region championships. Season Outlook: The Orange Beach Makos will play in Class 4A region one during the 2024 season. The Makos have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-45 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 4A and 42nd in the AHSAA. The Makos saw the hopes of a promising season spoiled last year by finishing with a 1-8 record. To make matters worse they had to watch their neighbor, Gulf Shores, win a state championship. In only their fifth year of varsity football the Makos hope to forget about last year and build a football program in Orange Beach under the direction of incoming head coach Wade Waldrop. The school has the resources and is building new facilities so everything is in place to produce a winning football program. Region One is difficult with the likes of Jackson and St. Michael leading the pack. Now Mobile Christian joins the group making the chances even more difficult to get one of the four playoff spots. The Makos return five starters on offense and six on defense. Coach Waldrop said he was ''Excited about the future.'' This season, the Makos will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. Season Opener: The Makos open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Elberta on Friday, August 23. Last year the Elberta Warriors finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 5A region one. The Warriors closed out the regular season with a loss to Citronelle by a score of 35-24. This will be the second meeting between Orange Beach and Elberta on the football field. The Makos have a 1-0-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in with | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
