2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
South Lamar completed the 2023 season with a 8-4 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region five, the Stallions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. South Lamar reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Wadley by a score of 81-27. The Stallions improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2019. Since 2010, South Lamar has gone a combined 74-83. Their 47.1% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, South Lamar has managed to compile a record of 139-140. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 1A and 179th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: South Lamar lost 1A All-State offensive lineman Jackson Shelton to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Head Coach: The Stallions are led by head coach Clay Gilliam who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 55-38 over the past eight seasons at South Lamar. Under his direction the Stallions have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gilliam. Season Outlook: The South Lamar Stallions will play in Class 1A region five during the 2024 season. The Stallions have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 58-53 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 1A and 144th in the AHSAA. The football program at South Lamar has seen improvement the past few seasons. Each of the past four years they won more games than the previous season finishing last year with an 8-4 record. Can they do it again in 2024 and win a few more than the eight games from last season? The Stallions should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Season Opener: The Stallions open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Lamar County on Friday, August 23 at J.C. McAdams Field. Last year the Lamar County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 2A region five. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Tanner by a score of 64-55. South Lamar and Lamar County have met a total of 40 times on the football field. The Stallions have a 20-20-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2023 with Lamar County winning by a score of 27-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
