2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Southeastern completed the 2023 season with a 7-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region six, the Mustangs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Southeastern reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Tuscaloosa Academy by a score of 38-6. Southeastern is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only twelve seasons. They have managed a record of 48-77 over the past twelve years. Over the past 12 seasons, Southeastern has managed to compile a record of 48-77. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 2A and 306th in the AHSAA. The Mustangs have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Graduated All-State Players: Southeastern lost 2A All-State defensive back Jarrod Williams to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Head Coach: The Mustangs are led by head coach Kevin Byrd who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 40-27 over the past six seasons at Southeastern. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won one region crown with Coach Byrd. Season Outlook: The Southeastern Mustangs will play in Class 2A region six during the 2024 season. The Mustangs will also open the 2024 football season without the services of running back Cole Williams who graduated in the spring along with the 1,592 yards and 21 touchdowns he scored last year. The Mustangs have put together four winning seasons in a row and seem to be ready to be a team to reckon with on a yearly basis in 2A North. Locust Fork is gone from Region 6 so the path to another region championship could be on the horizon at Southeastern. The Mustangs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Returning Starters: QB/WR Jericho Pendleton, Hunter Joiner, NG/FB Bowen Ware, FS Adam Kenyon Season Opener: The Mustangs open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Glencoe on Friday, August 23 at Southeastern Stadium. Last year the Glencoe Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in eighth place in Class 3A region six. The Yellow Jackets ended last season on a positive note with a win over West End Walnut Grove by a score of 48-28 after failing to gain a playoff spot. This will be the second meeting between Southeastern and Glencoe on the football field. The Mustangs have a 0-1-0 record against the Yellow Jackets.
