2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Westbrook Christian completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Westbrook Christian finished sixth in Class 3A region six with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Since 2010, Westbrook Christian has gone a combined 80-67. Their 54.4% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Westbrook Christian has managed to compile a record of 141-125. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 3A and 157th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Westbrook Christian lost 3A All-State offensive lineman Aiden Brown to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Head Coach: The Warriors are led by head coach Steve Smith who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-5 record in his first season at Westbrook Christian. The Warriors have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith. His 288 wins rank 6th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-seven times and won sixteen region championships. He has a 62-22 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Smith won five state championships prior to arriving at Westbrook Christian, the last coming in 2021 at Piedmont. Season Outlook: The Westbrook Christian Warriors will play in Class 3A region six during the 2024 season. The Warriors have missed the playoffs the past three seasons but most fans believe that streak will end very soon. Region 6 is joined this year by Locust Fork who makes the jump from 2A making the region one of the most crowded in the state with nine schools. Six schools won at least five games last year and there are only four playoff spots available. This should be a good region to watch in 2024. Westbrook will open the season with seven starters returning on offense and another eight on defense. So they will have more experience than last season. The off season weight and training program that Coach Smith implemented for the Warriors will certainly have them better prepared in their search for one of the elusive playoff spots in Region six. Coach Smith told AHSFHS.org about this year's team ''The team should continue to improve with a year in the weight room. Work ethic has been great, facilities are on par with the best in the state, support has been great. Looking forward to the season.'' The Warriors have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region six this season. Westbrook Christian has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2020 but hope to return to the post season this year.
