2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Alexandria finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Alexandria finished seventh in Class 5A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Alexandria took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2013. The Valley Cubs lost as many games as in any season since 1948. The defense allowed a team record 404 points last season. Alexandria struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.4 points a game. Since 2010, Alexandria has gone a combined 96-58. Their 62.3% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Alexandria has finished a combined 193-87. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 4A and 44th in the AHSAA. The Valley Cubs have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. Head Coach: The Valley Cubs are led by head coach Todd Ginn who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 42-25 over the past six seasons at Alexandria. Under his direction the Valley Cubs have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Ginn. Season Outlook: The Alexandria Valley Cubs will play in Class 4A region six during the 2024 season. The Valley Cubs may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region six this year. The Valley Cubs finished last season with a 1-9 record which was their worst showing in any season since 1969 when the went 1-8-1. They also missed the playoffs for only the second time since the 2002 football season. Do not look for the recent lapse to continue in Alexandria. This is a proud football program that will rebound quickly under Coach Todd Ginn. For the first time in ten seasons the Cubs will be back in 4A which could make their turn around a little smoother. They open the season against 5A Jacksonville then begin region play the next week against White Plains, Anniston and Oneonta. That will be a difficult opening month for Alexandria. This season, the Valley Cubs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. Returning Starters: Elijah Hunter, RB, Sr.; Ryan Brown, OL/LB, Jr. Season Opener: The Valley Cubs open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Jacksonville on Friday, August 30 at Lou Scales Stadium. Last year the Jacksonville Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in second place in Class 4A region four. The Golden Eagles lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Catholic Montgomery by a score of 44-20. Alexandria and Jacksonville have met a total of 87 times on the football field. The Valley Cubs have a 52-31-4 record against the Golden Eagles. They last met in 2023 with Jacksonville winning by a score of 45-21. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
