 2024 Preview

Center Point completed the 2023 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region six, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Center Point's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Hartselle by a score of 28-18.

Since 2010, Center Point has gone a combined 79-77. Their 50.6% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Center Point has managed to compile a record of 121-148. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 5A and 251st in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Center Point lost 6A All-State  athlete Malik Brown to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

Head Coach:
The Eagles are led by head coach George Bates who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 47-24 over the past six seasons at Center Point. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Bates. Over the course of his career, Coach Bates' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won one region championship.

Season Outlook:

The Center Point Eagles will play in Class 5A region six during the 2024 season. The Eagles may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region six this year.

The Eagles four losses last year were to Clay-Chalkville, Oxford, Leeds and Hartselle. So a 7-4 record may have been a little deceiving on the surface. Look for the Eagles to once again be very competitive in 2024 and secure a playoff spot from region six.

The schedule is manageable for the the first half of the season but games against region foes Moody and Leeds will highlight the second half of this season.

Coach Bates told us; ''We have great speed. We want to be a more physical team. We have a punishing RB in #21 Julius Finnerson. @FinnersonJulius Our returning Captain #1 Therman Deon Moore plays both sides of the ball. Starting QB and DB @tmoe003 Antonio Garfield is a threat also on both sides of the ball. @AntonioGarfiel2 is a threat also on both sides of the ball. @AntonioGarfiel2.''

''We will have a senior lead team, that should compete for the Region title, and with hope of leading us to compete for the Blue Map.''

The Eagles have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region six this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2017 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2024.

Players to Watch in 2024:
QB Therman Deon Moore will be back for his senior season after completing 95-of-159 passes for 1,309 yards and 19 TDs last season. He also ran for another 794 yards and 9 TDs.

DB Kaleb Parker-Holt collected 95 tackles (57 solo) including 5 sacks and will be back for his senior season.

Also returning will be DB Jaquoryae Busby collected 77 tackles (50 solo) including 2 sacks.

Season Opener:
The Eagles open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Bessemer City on Friday, August 23 at Bessemer City Stadium. Last year the Bessemer City Purple Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in third place in Class 6A region four. The Purple Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Spanish Fort by a score of 28-0.

Center Point and Bessemer City have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 0-4-0 record against the Purple Tigers. They last met in 2015 with Bessemer City winning by a score of 37-16.
