2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Central finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year Central just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region four with a 2-5 region record. The Lions have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2024. Central was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.7 points a game. Central struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.8 points a game. Since 2010, the Central football program has struggled with a record of 30-104. Over the past 25 seasons, Central has not won much with a record of 53-191. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 2A and 379th in the AHSAA. The Lions have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Coaching Change: Corvin Johnson leaves Central High School after just two seasons with a record of 5-13 to show for his efforts. 2024 Head Coach: Jul Little is from Linden where he played football from 2007-2011. He is a 2012 graduate of Linden High School. After graduation he signed a scholarship to play at Miles College and played one season there under Reginald Ruffin. Coach Little then transferred to UAB, walked on and played on the 2014 team that got cancelled, before graduating in 2016. His coaching career began in 2019 at Clarke County High School. He spent two seasons there under Coach Stacy Luker coaching running backs and assisting with Defensive Backs. After those two seasons he returned home to Linden as the Offensive Coordinator in 2021. In 2022 he switched to the defensive coordinator. Season Outlook: The Central Lions will play in Class 2A region one during the 2024 season. The Lions move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Lions missed the playoffs the past two seasons and will find a new home in 2A in Region One. Competition for one of the four playoff spots will be fierce. The Lions of Hayneville will be under the direction of Coach Jul Little in 2024. He brings a new enthusiasm to the program with hopes of building something special there. Coach Little told us about this year's team. ''The growth this team has made throughout this season. The team has plenty of potential '' This season, the Lions will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: Iyanis Wallace, Eron Foster, Jamarcus Webb, Roderius Seawright DEFENSE: Iyanis Wallace, Jamarcus Webb, Dramon Johnson, Jaden Middleton, Eron Foster NEWCOMERS: Jakayden Seawright, Jabraylen Thomas, Rakim Mcghee Jr., Danjuma Gordon Jr. Season Opener: The Lions open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent LaFayette on Friday, August 30 at Bulldog Stadium. Last year the LaFayette Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 1-8 and in seventh place in Class 2A region three. Central and LaFayette have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Lions have a 0-4-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2003 with LaFayette winning by a score of 57-22. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
