2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Calhoun finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 3-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region four, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Calhoun's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Leroy by a score of 40-7. The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2012. It marked the first time since the 1999 season that the Tigers qualified for the playoffs. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Calhoun was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.9 points a game. The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-17 record. Since 2010, the Calhoun football program has struggled with a record of 15-125. Over the past 25 seasons, Calhoun has not won much with a record of 32-220. Their 13.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 2A and 390th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only one winning season during this time. Their last winning season was 1999. Head Coach: The Tigers are led by head coach Ervin Starr who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-56 over the past six seasons at Calhoun. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Starr. Season Outlook: The Calhoun Tigers will play in Class 2A region three during the 2024 season. The Tigers move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Tigers have gone 24 consecutive seasons without finishing a single year winning more games than they lost. Could this be the year they break that long standing streak? They did make the playoffs last season for the first time since 1999 so there is something to build on right there. The Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Season Opener: The Tigers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Keith on Friday, August 23 at Samuel Bruce Stadium. Last year the Keith Bears finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 1A region three. The Bears lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Georgiana by a score of 61-0. Calhoun and Keith have met a total of 20 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 5-15-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2017 with Keith winning by a score of 49-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
