2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cleveland finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Cleveland just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region six with a 1-5 region record. Cleveland took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2019. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 1998. The Panthers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 7-4 record in 2022. Cleveland was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.6 points a game. Cleveland struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.1 points a game. Since 2010, Cleveland has gone a combined 94-66. Their 58.8% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cleveland has managed to compile a record of 144-131. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 2A and 180th in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Panthers are led by head coach Will Glaze who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-13 over the past two seasons at Cleveland. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Glaze. Season Outlook: The Cleveland Panthers will play in Class 2A region six during the 2024 season. Last season the Panthers finished 1-9 missing the playoffs for the first time since 2013. It was a season to forget as they won the fewest games since 1998. Coach Glaze will be out to make certain that does not happen again in 2024. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. Season Opener: The Panthers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Whitesburg Christian on Friday, August 23 at Whitesburg Christian Stadium. Last year the Whitesburg Christian Warriors finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 2A region seven. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over Tharptown by a score of 44-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot. This will be the second meeting between Cleveland and Whitesburg Christian on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-0-0 record against the Warriors.
