2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Deshler completed the 2023 season with a 8-4 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region seven, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Deshler reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Westminster Christian by a score of 39-35. The defense allowed a team record 359 points last season. The high-scoring Deshler offense ranked 18th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.7 points a game. Since 2010, Deshler has gone a combined 114-60. Their 65.5% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Deshler has finished a combined 233-92. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 4A and 26th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Graduated All-State Players: Deshler lost 4A All-State offensive lineman Jamarian Acklin to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Head Coach: The Tigers are led by head coach Patrick Malone who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 20-5 over the past two seasons at Deshler. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Malone. Over the course of his career, Coach Malone's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. Season Outlook: The Deshler Tigers will play in Class 4A region seven during the 2024 season. The Deshler Tigers are a quality football program. No doubt about it. After two early season losses they won eight of their next nine games last year and finished with a record of 8-4. In their four losses the defense allowed no less than 35 points in each of them. The offense has been great the past two seasons but they will need to shore up the defense to get back to making deep playoff runs once again in 2024. They open the season against an excellent Russellville team this year before jumping right into region play in week two. Region 7 is loaded with playoff quality teams so every region game will be important this year for the Tigers. The Tigers will be very experienced this fall with eight starters from last year's squad returning and six on defense. That should equate into another playoff run in 2024 and possibly more. Coach Malone said this about the 2024 Deshler Tigers. ''A young team with just a handful of seniors. Coming off an 8-4 year in 2023, Deshler has a lot to prove in the newly aligned 4A Region 7.'' The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: Josh Smith (Center); Price Thornton (QB); Camden Fuller (WR); Garrett Reid (Wingback); Q Harden (Tailback); Ayden Noyola (TE); Dylan Morgan (OT); Jett Kerr (Guard) DEFENSE: Warner Johnson (Safety); Linkin Brown (Safety); Garrett Reid (Corner); Jovi Jackson (Corner); Ayden Noyola (MLB); Dayton Sanford (OLB) NEWCOMERS: Eli Edwards (Wingback/OLB); Armani McClendon (Fullback); Brycen Williams (Safety/Wingback); Kendrick Gunn (Safety/Tailback); Korrian Anderson (Noseguard); Phoenix Carpenter (Defensive Tackle) Season Opener: The Tigers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Russellville on Friday, August 23 at Tigers Stadium. Last year the Russellville Golden Tigers finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in first place in Class 5A region eight. The Golden Tigers lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Moody by a score of 42-21. Deshler and Russellville have met a total of 98 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 48-46-4 record against the Golden Tigers. They last met in 2023 with Russellville winning by a score of 35-13. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
