 2024 Preview 


       Elkmont completed the 2023 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Elkmont finished sixth in Class 3A region eight with a 2-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Red Devils won as many games as in any season since 2014.

       Elkmont struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.0 points a game.

       Since 2010, the Elkmont football program has struggled with a record of 36-107.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Elkmont has not won much with a record of 85-174. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 3A and 336th in the AHSAA.

Coaching Change:
     Chris Bunio  parted ways with Elkmont just eight games into the 2023 football season. His record in the year and a half span was 5-13 at Elkmont. The staff completed the season serving in the head coaching role in 2023.

The Red Devils have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2014 football season which was also the last winning season for the school. Since that year they will be hiring their fifth head football coach in 2024.

2024 Head Coach:
    Joel Schrenk  stepped down as the head football coach at Woodland in January. He led the football program the past two seasons with a record of 4-16. He leaves after a dozen seasons as the head coach at Falkville, Hazel Green and Woodland. His overall record stands at 60-66. Schrenk arrives in Elkmont in hopes of turning around a program that has struggled recently. Over the course of his career, Coach Schrenk's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won two region championships.

Season Outlook:

       The Elkmont Red Devils will play in Class 3A region seven during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Red Devils remain in 3A but move from region eight over to region seven.

      

       Top priority this fall will be to find a replacement for graduated starting quarterback John Adam Doner and the 2,150 yards he threw for last season.

       The Red Devils have not made the playoffs since 2014 and not won a playoff game since 2011 so one goal as the season approaches will likely be to get to the post season in 2024. Elkmont finished last year 4-6 which was their best season since 2014.

       Elkmont will have seven starters from last season back on offense and will welcome back seven to the defense.

       Coach Schrenk had this to say about his Elkmont squad in 2024. ''Optimism abounds, we have a chance to have some success early. Our biggest concern is depth and staying injury free. Our future is bright and we are very happy with our kids and how coachable they are. With a little luck we may just surprise some folks.''

    The Red Devils could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Elkmont has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2014 but hope to return to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      DE Noah Holt had 59 tackles on defense and will be back for his junior season.

Season Opener:
       The Red Devils open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent St. John Paul II on Friday, August 23 at Boss Hill Stadium. Last year the St. John Paul II Falcons finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region eight. The Falcons ended last season on a positive note with a win over Elkmont by a score of 42-20 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Elkmont and St. John Paul II have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 1-2-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2023 with St. John Paul II winning by a score of 42-20.
