2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
J.F. Shields finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year J.F. Shields finished seventh in Class 1A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as J.F. Shields averaged scoring just 9.2 points a game. The Panthers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 46.7 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-20 record. Since 2010, the J.F. Shields football program has struggled with a record of 15-92. Over the past 22 seasons, J.F. Shields has not won much with a record of 50-169. Their 23.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 1A and 381st in the AHSAA. The Panthers have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2001. Head Coach: The Panthers are led by head coach Jerome Antone who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at J.F. Shields. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Antone. Season Outlook: The J.F. Shields Panthers will play in Class 1A region one during the 2024 season. The Panthers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 49-48 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 1A and 179th in the AHSAA. The Panthers enter the 2024 season in the middle of a 23 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. One of the smallest schools in the state has struggled to win games for a long time. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at J.F. Shields will be to simply win some games. J.F. Shields simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 53 students, the Panthers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. Season Opener: The Panthers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Red Level on Friday, August 30 at Panther Field (The Pit). Last year the Red Level Tigers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 1A region two. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Samson by a score of 54-32. J.F. Shields and Red Level have met a total of 17 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 6-11-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2021 with Red Level winning by a score of 49-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
