 2024 Preview

Lincoln completed the 2023 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Lincoln finished sixth in Class 5A region six with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Lincoln was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Golden Bears want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.7 points a game.

Since 2010, Lincoln has gone a combined 66-87. Their 43.1% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Lincoln has managed to compile a record of 138-141. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 5A and 187th in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Golden Bears are led by head coach Matt Zedaker who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 33-41 over the past seven seasons at Lincoln. Under his direction the Golden Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Zedaker.

Season Outlook:

The Lincoln Golden Bears will play in Class 5A region six during the 2024 season.

The Golden Bears missed the playoffs the past two seasons marking the first time they have done that since 2005-06. Last year late season losses to Springville and St. Clair County derailed any hope of the playoffs.

Coach Zedaker said at media days the team will be young with only 14 seniors out of the 70 players dressing out on the varsity squad. He said the Golden Bears will play with a chip on their shoulder as underdogs in most of their games but he likes that fact.

The Golden Bears will get away from the spread-option offense they used last year and go with more of a wide open air-raid offense in 2024. Coach Zedaker believes this will better fit the talent he has at Lincoln. A new weight program and more discipline were the keys to summer workouts.

The Golden Bears could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Lincoln missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2024.

Season Opener:
The Golden Bears open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Shelby County on Friday, August 23 at Keith Howard Memorial Stadium. Last year the Shelby County Wildcats finished with an overall record of 2-9 and in fourth place in Class 5A region three. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Eufaula by a score of 65-19.

Lincoln and Shelby County have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Golden Bears have a 3-3-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 1951 with Lincoln winning by a score of 33-27.
