2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Madison County finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Madison County finished seventh in Class 4A region eight with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2004. Madison County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 41.3 points a game. Since 2010, Madison County has gone a combined 85-72. Their 54.1% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Madison County has managed to compile a record of 135-137. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 4A and 193rd in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Matt Putnam after just three seasons at the helm in Madison County leaves with a record of 11-21. Two of his squads managed to reach the playoffs but none posted a winning record. His overall record in 14 seasons as a head football coach stands at 75-75 and 3-7 in the playoffs. He was previously the head coach at Hazel Green for five seasons and another six at Sylvania before arriving at Hazel Green in 2021. 2024 Head Coach: Chris Hancock spent the past six seasons as the defensive coordinator at Huntsville and previously coached at Buckhorn, Sparkman, and Columbia. Season Outlook: The Madison County Tigers will play in Class 4A region eight during the 2024 season. The Tigers missed the playoffs last year after getting in the previous four seasons. A 2-8 record is the worst for the school since the 2004 football season. First year head coach Chris Hancock hopes to turn things around quickly and get the Tigers back to the post season very soon. The Tigers will be young but talented in 2024. They only return three starters from last year's team on offense and three on defense. They will rely on a host of young players who will be counted on to contribute early in the season. Coach Hancock said about this year's team at Madison County ''A very young experienced talented team that will have to build game experience starting from game one of the fall season. A team that could surprise some region competition throughout the season.'' This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: OL- Kyle Smith; TE- Braden Reed; RB- Keontae Hill DEFENSE: DL- Damian Rorem; DL- Jamin Brake; SS- Carter Poblete NEWCOMERS: Offensive: WR- Brody Snider; WR- Zach Montgomery; QB- Junior Towns; OL- Logan Morris; QB- Jackson Hastings Defensive: LB- Jace Tomlin; RB/DB- Marlon Jones; DB- Kaleb Harbin; OL/DL- Jackson Martinez Season Opener: The Tigers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Boaz on Friday, August 23 at L.F. Corley Field. Last year the Boaz Pirates finished with an overall record of 6-6 and in fourth place in Class 5A region seven. The Pirates lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Pleasant Grove by a score of 49-7. Madison County and Boaz have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 5-6-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2021 with Madison County winning by a score of 42-35. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
