2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marengo finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Marengo just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region three with a 1-4 region record. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2012. Marengo was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.0 points a game. Since 2010, Marengo has gone a combined 72-78. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marengo has managed to compile a record of 131-134. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 1A and 210th in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Panthers are led by head coach Katrell Watters who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 7-13 over the past two seasons at Marengo. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Watters. Season Outlook: The Marengo Panthers will play in Class 1A region one during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 1A but move from region three over to region one. The Marengo Panthers fell off a little the past two seasons missing the playoffs each year after seven straight appearance between 2015-22. The Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Marengo missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2024. Marengo simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 65 students, the Panthers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. Season Opener: The Panthers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent St. Lukes on Friday, August 30 at Panther Stadium. Last year the St. Lukes Wildcats finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class 2A region one. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Isabella by a score of 44-17. Marengo and St. Lukes have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 3-6-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2023 with St. Lukes winning by a score of 31-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
