 2024 Preview

Oneonta completed the 2023 season with a 7-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region six, the Redskins earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Oneonta's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Brooks by a score of 56-42.

The high-scoring Oneonta offense ranked 16th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.9 points a game.

Since 2010, Oneonta has gone a combined 124-52. Their 70.5% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Oneonta has finished a combined 216-93. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 4A and 48th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Oneonta lost 4A All-State  running back Fluff Bothwell to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

Head Coach:
The Redskins are led by head coach Phil Phillips who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 56-20 over the past six seasons at Oneonta. Under his direction the Redskins have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won one region crown with Coach Phillips.

Season Outlook:

The Oneonta Redskins will play in Class 4A region six during the 2024 season.

The Redskins enter the 2024 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

How do you replace a player like Da'Marion Bothwell? All he did last year was rush for 3,112 yards and score 41 touchdowns. The simple answer is you don't. The Redskins will open the season against Locust Fork with hopes of filling in the vacant positions along with the loss of their star running back to graduation.

What started out as a promising season last year ended with a wild and crazy loss to Brooks 56-42 in the first round of the playoffs. The Redskins have a great football program and a history of winning for the past few decades. Coach Phillips is doing a great job but they would like to get past the first round in 2024.

The Redskins will return six starters from last season to the offense including QB Keilyn Rhetta. The defense will welcome back five starters.

Coach Phillips is counting on a big group of newcomers and younger players to contribute early in the season. He said. ''Very inexperienced at all skill positions. Return some depth up front. Seem to have a good mix of old and young working together. Off season has been good so far. Tough tough region with no weeks off. All 3 non region games tough as well. Hopefully we find a way to be ready.''

The Redskins should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2017 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2024.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: RB- Makhel Montgomery; OL- Blake Teal; OL- Pate Pass; OL- Logan Wester; OL- Dillon Goodemoot; QB- Keilyn Rhetta
DEFENSE: DE- Pate Pass; DT- Kason Kyle; LB- Aidan Ousley; LB- Makhel Montgomery; DE- Brooks Clowdus
NEWCOMERS: WR/DB- Aidden White; OL/DL- Carson Harper; WR/DB- Carter Clyde; WR/DB- Ben Vincent; WR/DB- Jag Johnson; FB/LB- Mason chambers; OL/DL- Mason Bailey; WR/DB- Maddox Byrd; OL/DL- Dawson Self; RB/DB- Santana Lofton; TE/DL- Eli Ragsdale

Season Opener:
The Redskins open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Locust Fork on Friday, August 23 at Pate Field. Last year the Locust Fork Hornets finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 2A region six. The Hornets lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 2A playoffs to Fyffe by a score of 63-33.

Oneonta and Locust Fork have met a total of 57 times on the football field. The Redskins have a 49-8-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2015 with Oneonta winning by a score of 62-0.
