 2024 Preview 


       West End completed the 2023 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region six, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. West End's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Fyffe by a score of 48-0.

       Since 2010, the West End football program has struggled with a record of 50-95.

       Over the past 25 seasons, West End has managed to compile a record of 107-156. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 2A and 272nd in the AHSAA.

Coaching Change:
     Derrick Sewell  leaves West End after three seasons with a break even record of 16-16. His last two teams reached the playoffs falling in the first round. Sewell would later accept the head coaching job at Gaston.

2024 Head Coach:
    Matt Harris  is a 1999 graduate of West End High School where he played football for the patriots. In 2024 he returns home as the head football coach at West End. He served as the offensive line coach for the Patriots last season before being promoted in April. Harris was the head coach at Gaston between 2020-2022. Harris also made assistant coaching stops at Sardis, Boaz and Locust Fork.

Season Outlook:

       The West End Patriots will play in Class 2A region six during the 2024 season.

      

       The Patriots reached the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008 the past two years. They hope to continue that success this year.

       West End returns six starters from last year's 5-6 team on offense and six to the defense. So there is still a nucleus of players with experience and some newcomers they hope will step up in key roles as the season progresses.

       First year head Coach Matt Harris said about this year's team ''2024 should be a solid season for WEHS with several key returning starters and plenty of experience for those who will be entering new roles as full time starters. We look to continue to build on the back to back playoff appearance guided by Derrick Sewell as new head coach takes over.''

    The Patriots have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region six this season.

Season Opener:
       The Patriots open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Pleasant Valley on Friday, August 23 at Patriot Stadium. Last year the Pleasant Valley Raiders finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in third place in Class 2A region six. The Raiders lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Pisgah by a score of 44-20.

       West End and Pleasant Valley have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 13-6-0 record against the Raiders. They last met in 2023 with Pleasant Valley winning by a score of 34-14.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
