2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodland finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Woodland finished sixth in Class 2A region four with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Woodland was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bobcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.6 points a game. The Bobcats would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Woodland has gone a combined 68-89. Their 43.3% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Woodland has managed to compile a record of 135-151. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 1A and 217th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Joel Schrenk stepped down as the head football coach in January. He led the football program at Woodland for the past two seasons with a record of 4-16. He leaves after a dozen seasons as the head coach at Falkville, Hazel Green and Woodland. His overall record stands at 60-66. 2024 Head Coach: Kevin Smith returns home to his alma mater at Woodland in 2024 as the head football coach. Smith has 29 years of coaching experience and has been at Lanett, Handley and Benjamin Russell. He graduated from Woodland High School and played football at Jacksonville State. Season Outlook: The Woodland Bobcats will play in Class 1A region six during the 2024 season. The Bobcats may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region six this year. A couple of down years at Woodland led to a coaching change and hopes of turning around the losing for the Bobcats in 2024. The Bobcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Woodland missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2024. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Brayden Yates will be returning for his senior season after completing 35-of-79 passes for 614 yards and 5 TDs last season. RB David Noles will also be back after rushing for 755 yards and 4 TDs last season. Returning Starters: WR/S Garrett Hendrix, RB Brayden Yates, WR Bradley Brasher, LB/TE Tobin Pinkard Season Opener: The Bobcats open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Randolph County on Friday, August 23 at Hulond Humphries Stadium. Last year the Randolph County Tigers finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 3A region four. The Tigers lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to St. James by a score of 41-6. Woodland and Randolph County have met a total of 80 times on the football field. The Bobcats have a 24-54-2 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2023 with Randolph County winning by a score of 41-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
