 2024 Preview

Wadley completed the 2023 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Wadley captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Wadley lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Pickens County team by a score of 18-14.

The Bulldogs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Motley saw improvement as they won eleven games following a 6-5 record in 2022.

The high-scoring Wadley offense ranked 15th in the AHSAA. They averaged 42.1 points a game.

The Bulldogs defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 26th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 13.4 points a game.

Since 2010, Wadley has gone a combined 102-58. Their 63.8% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Wadley has finished a combined 212-86. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 1A and 39th in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Bulldogs are led by head coach Shenan Motley who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 38-22 over the past five seasons at Wadley. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Motley. Over the course of his career, Coach Motley's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won two region championships.

Season Outlook:

The Wadley Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region six during the 2024 season.

The Bulldogs have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 54-45 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 1A and 117th in the AHSAA.

Wadley enters the 2024 season with a string of 11 consecutive wins on their home field at Curtis Lynch Memorial Field.

A word of caution. Watch out for the Wadley Bulldogs in 2024. They return star running back Jaquez Wilkes in the backfield which will put them in contention for another deep playoff run this year.

The Bulldogs have reached the playoffs in each of the past eleven seasons and will looking to extend that streak when the season opens in August.

The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region six and could very well be representing the North in the Class 1A title game. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2012 and this year should be no exception.

Players to Watch in 2024:
RB Jaquez Wilkes will return after rushing for 1,792 yards and 22 TDs last season as a sophomore. Wadley also had 104 tackles on defense.

RB Cortavion Lynch will also return after rushing for 1,108 yards and 21 TDs as a sophomore in 2023.

Returning Starters:
MLB/FB Ty Taylor, WR/CB Frisco Robertson, CB/WR Damarious Spraddling, RB/OLB Trae Heath, TE/DE Logan Murr, G/NG JaBari Burns

Season Opener:
The Bulldogs open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent B.B. Comer on Friday, August 23 at Legion Stadium. Last year the B.B. Comer Tigers finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 2A region four. The Tigers lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 2A playoffs to Reeltown by a score of 31-28.

Wadley and B.B. Comer have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 1-1-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 1941 with B.B. Comer winning by a score of 13-0.
