fairfield completed the 2023 season with a 4-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region five, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. fairfield's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Russellville by a score of 38-21. fairfield struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.7 points a game. Since 2010, fairfield has gone a combined 74-75. Their 49.7% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, fairfield has managed to compile a record of 140-132. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 4A and 182nd in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: fairfield lost 5A All-State receiver JeDan Gilbert to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. Head Coach: The Tigers are led by head coach Shepherd Skanes who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 7-15 over the past two seasons at fairfield. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Skanes. Season Outlook: The fairfield Tigers will play in Class 4A region four during the 2024 season. The Tigers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region four this year. fairfield will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. The Fairfield Tigers have made the playoff in each of the past four seasons but may find the going a bit tougher in 2024 even though they drop down in classification to 4A. With the AHSAA realignment region 4 has six teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Not all of those teams will make the post season this year. With the likes of Bibb County, American Christian, Pleasant Grove and West Blocton the competition for the four playoff spots available will be intense this year. The Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Jumaria Hamilton will be returning after completing 84-of-157 passes for 1,631 yards and 19 TDs last season. He added another 487 yards rushing. RB Justin Murray will be returning for his junior season after rushing for 1,291 yards and 11 TDs last season. Returning Starters: RB Justin Murray, QB Jumaria Hamilton, WR Cade Austin Season Opener: The Tigers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent LeFlore on Friday, August 23 at Clements Field. Last year the LeFlore Rattlers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in ninth place in Class 5A region one. The Rattlers closed out the regular season with a loss to Faith Academy by a score of 21-6. This will be the second meeting between fairfield and LeFlore on the football field.
