I have been sitting on this for about a week but since I will not be the first one to break the news here are some preliminary numbers we should see come next week after the AHSAA Central Board meets in Montgomery.

Remember this is before any changes that could be made by the AHSAA next week. Once there is a formal announcement I will post the new region alignments for each classification.

If you want more details for any region, class or team just ask a question by responding to this post and I will look it up for you. Most of the regions are set unless changes are made next week.

A few surprises from the preliminary enrollment numbers and 2022 reclassification.

Opelika, Lee Montgomery and Chelsea move up to 7A.
Murphy and Theodore move down to 6A.
Pike Road moves up to 6A.
Vigor moves up to 5A.
T.R. Miller and Catholic Montgomery move up to 4A
Orange Beach goes from 2A as a new school all the way to 4A next year.
Tuscaloosa Academy moves from the AISA to 3A
Northside Methodist Academy moves from an independent to 3A.
Mars Hill moves up to 3A.
Gordo moves down to 3A.
Fyffe moves down to 2A.
Leroy, Elba, Addison and Spring Garden all move down to 1A.

Just saw this article about Escambia County in Atmore. Looks like they think they should be 3A and not 4A:

https://atmorenews.com/2021/12/22/no-stepdown/

There appears the slim possibility that ECHS could still move down to Class 3A. Scott Mason, the local school?s head football coach and athletic director, said state education officials are looking into possible discrepancies between the state?s attendance numbers and the school?s numbers.

?The situation is currently being reevaluated by the Alabama Department of Education between ECHS and ECMS [Escambia County Middle School] because of number discrepancies that are out of our control,? he said. ?We have 3A numbers, but something is not adding up. We feel like we have similar numbers as W.S. Neal, but there are some extenuating circumstances that drive us over the limit which are now being revaluated.?

So the competitive balance rule is being applied regardless if a school has been elevated in class by the rule. Both Alabama Christian and Madison Academy were in 4A by enrollment and are now in 3A by enrollment but are having to stay in 4A because of CB points.

With Madison Academy moving out of 3A region 7. The 4 teams going to the playoffs are known its just a matter of seeding. Short of a miracle by Asbury or Brindlee Mtn. But I guess thats why they say they play the games.

Its happened a lot over the years since going to regions through different classifications its always 7 and 8 I've never noticed a rhyme or reason to it.

What I mean is, for instance, the Brooks/Deshler/Wilson/Central region has always been 4A R8, while the schools on the northeast end of the State (Madison Co/Madison Academy/NJHS) have always been R7. But it appears this classification that has changed and now the Brooks region is 7 and the NE region is 8.

No clue, the AHSAA screws up a lot. My guess is that with a new AHSAA director they did not even look at keep those things the same. They also screwed up on reclassification stuff. Just today they released new regions for 4A and 3A. Madison Academy and Alabama Christian will move back into 4A.

My biggest takeaway at this point is that the Ohatchee-Piedmont-Saks-Wellborn region got split up, with Ohatchee and Piedmont staying together and being added to the region Fyffe was in this past year. So somehow the region for those two teams managed to get even tougher because they now have each other, as well as Sylvania, Plainview, and Geraldine as region games.

My first thought was that has to be the hardest region in 3A. That thing aint for the weak for sure. Look for Sylvania to really make some noise.

Go Eagles!

As for how it affects my alma mater (Brewer), the Region gets slightly harder with Fairview and West Point entering and Mae Jemison and Lee-Huntsville leaving though I still wouldn't consider it exactly deep. West Point is kind of a wash but Fairview has been solid recently. Plunkett's been successful at his stops (Cullman aside). If he can keep participation high in his second year a playoff spot isn't totally out of the question.

I think the biggest surprise in North Alabama is Madison Academy moving to 3A.

Go Eagles!

My first thought was "MA and Fyffe would be a fun matchup" but then saw Fyffe dropped back down to 2A.

Fyffe will still be very good but I believe they are normalizing just a little bit. Based on talent level I believe it is borderline criminal for MA to drop to 3A.

Go Eagles!

Ok. No more speculation. The new realignments are posted now on the home page.

Have fun. I will get the coaching changes done today and the teams will then reflect any changes. I can't add the 2022 season for the teams until I got the new realignments so I am scrambling to get everything updated.

My quick analysis. I'm sure it has happened before but I don't remember it but the former 6A region 7 was completely obliterated. Usually something stays the same if only the region covers the same geographic area or some teams in one region get rebranded as another. That region got scattered to the wind.

It's like Christmas morning for HS football fans in Alabama. Some will get candy and nuts and some will get a lump of coal!

Go Eagles!

Also, does Ohatchee stay 3A or go back down to 2A?

Lincoln, Munford and Ohatchee all remain where they were. Almost no changes in region opponents. Looks like Southside and Springville join Lincoln. Talladega joins Munford. No changes for Ohatchee region.

Pleasant Valley moving down or staying 3A? If moving who is their replacement?

Pleasant Valley will be 2A. Looks like the old region may just have seven team.
