Coming from Georgia, it seems strange to me the way the AHSAA determines which team plays at home after the first round of the playoffs. Why does a lower-seed team get to host a playoff game just because they had to travel the week prior? To me if a team won their region they have earned the right to get to play at home until they match up against another number 1 seed team. That should be one of the perks of winning or placing high in the region. Can anyone better explain why the AHSAA playoffs are set up this way?

Thanks! We have found another good coach finally since Fossett left (now at Comer) and he has fielded a few good teams and we have some decent talent coming up as well. I?m knew at worst we?d compete but I definitely didn?t expect to score 20 unanswered off the bus then give up 24 unanswered back to DH before we woke up again then the shootout in the 2nd half was nuts.

I think Pickens County this week may put us out though, I honestly don?t think we go over there and win but you never know

Known Coach Mansfield for a long time. Great coach and even better man. He waited a long time to be a head coach, and I'm glad he's been successful at Winterboro.

Gig,

Yep it?s me

And yes I miss the old Al.com boards. Man we had some fun back then lol

It seems like Fyffe always plays at home during the playoff. So, I went back and checked. Not counting state championship games, out of their last 40 playoff games, they have played 32 of their playoff games at home. That seems like a lot.

I miss those old al.com forums :)

We need a few more posting here.

It?s definitely set up to cut down on travel costs and to spread the wealth to everyone

Powerlineman, I recall that username on the old AL forums. Same person?

Yeah there are factors. Brooks will host Priceville this week. Priceville is on top of the bracket, but both have traveled the same amount so it defers to the higher seed. Brooks is a 3 Priceville is a 4.

I kind of like the way it is. Two reasons: Cutting down on the amount of travel is good. (May not work out that way for us this year) Also, not all regions are created equal. So if you are a 4 and go on the road and beat a 1 you should be able to host.

Go Eagles!

As silly as it sounds. The team on top of the bracket hosts in that scenario.

I think a change that could be made is that if two 1 seeds meet in the playoffs then the team with the better record or higher ASWA ranking hosts or maybe use the tiebreaker points scenario as an option.

As someone who?s played under the AHSAA and was on a second seed team that won state, we had hosted the first round and traveled all the remaining back in 2003. I can?t complain about how it is. I think it?s fine the way it is. It?s fair for giving all teams chance to host if they keep winning. Furthermore, I think at some point teams like to travel and play at new stadiums and see new communities while riding the charter bus. It?s kind of a breath of fresh air.

I do agree with what was said on region 1 always being up top of the bracket. I think region playoff placements should be rotated yearly like the playoff pairings.

That's the thing that has always annoyed me, because Region 1 is usually at the top of the bracket and therefore always has the advantage there.

If both 1 seeds advance to the third round how is home field determined. If both played 2 home home games?

Yeah I think these are the answers. I assume the home teams still get a cut of the money from ticket sales, so it gives more teams the opportunity to make extra money by hosting a game. Plus travel in the playoffs is typically a lot further than regular season travel, so a lot of these smaller schools can't afford to potentially make a 4-6 hour round trip four weeks in a row.
robinsonakr Posted - 11/01/2023 : 11:16:05
Ive never understood it either. I have seen region champs in the second and third rounds have to travel to lower seeds because of this rule. And sometimes the distances in the second and third rounds can be far.

You would think they would emphasize winning the region championship more and letting these seeds host throughout the playoffs instead of the less travel rule or the top of bracket rule.

The only way a region championship is beneficial is in round 1 and when you host someone from your own region.

Always has boggled my mind!
