Thread to post about any game you may have attended or watched online or TV.
Went to the Arab vs Moody game. It really came down to penalties and coaching IMO. Moody had to have been flagged a dozen times at least. Their offensive line had trouble with Arab's defensive line all night, particularly the nose tackle (#6).
Arab isn't a fast team but they have this way of negating any speed advantage their opponents may have. Will be interesting to see how they match up with Pleasant Grove next week. I think they may be able to control the game with their running back. Lee Ozmint might be one of the underrated coaches in the state.
But I gotta vent a little on Moody's game plan. Not much frustrates me more as a neutral fan when a high school team has a D1 prospect, a WR commit to Arkansas in this case, and the team has no idea how to utilize his talents. Moody started the game giving him a couple of jet sweeps which both earned some positive yardage. After that the only time he'd be involved were prayer throws hoping his height would be enough. Arab's DB was playing so soft on him he looked like a third safety. I'm screaming in my head to just throw it to the receiver in the flat and let him make a move. He'd bust 10 yards or more every time. Oh well. |

I agree 100% with your assessment. Calling the game from the sideline We could not match up with Dozier just try and keep everything in front of them. When Moody called pass plays they were go routs and the pressure would force the QB to bring his eyes down and the WRs would keep running and not come back and get open. They were most constantly successful letting Dozier find the open space by the soft coverage and make plays like you said. I think their schedule did Moody no favors. Same could be for Plesant Grove although they have more playoff experience. Ozmint is one of the best coaches in the state and glad he's getting the recognition for this run. |

Ok raise your hand if you thought two weeks ago we would see Geraldine in the third round after facing Winfield and Mars Hill in back to back games.
The top four classes went about as predicted but the three lower classes saw a lot of games with surprise winners. Tuscaloosa Academy making the playoffs in their first season in the AHSAA and still playing is great.
Most of the teams still hanging around are familiar to these deep playoffs runs but I love to see the new faces playing in the quarterfinals. Teams like Arab, Charles Henderson, Randolph, Geraldine, St. James, Sylvania, Coosa Christian, Pisgah, Lynn and Millry. Good to see these fanbases excited in November.

I didn?t have Geraldine advancing but I am not overly surprised either. Them and Sylvania are good football teams. Sylvania could very well win it all IMO. They have a sold OL/DL, two very good RB, a mismatch at WR, and a cool customer at QB.

Having been in Arley Friday Night for Pickens County and Meek my thoughts are those young men for Meek gave their all for a great season but they genuinely let one slip away. Missed opportunities in the First Half were their downfall. It should?ve been 22-0 at halftime but Meek uncharacteristiclly had Fumbles and that allowed Pickens County to hang around to be able to rally late. Even despite the first half mistakes the Tigers lead 36-22 with 3:23 left in the game and every prayer Pickens heaved up was answered. The Tornadoes did what they had to do but the Tigers definitely didn?t execute when they needed to and that hurts bad being a alumni. It was a great season but it was a tough way to watch it end. |

Moody did the exact same thing when they played Lincoln. I think he touched the ball maybe 3-4 times the whole game. I have no idea why they weren't just throwing a jump ball to him on every play, cause he had a solid 6 inches on every player on our team. Both times they did he effortlessly went over our DBs in double and triple coverage and came down with the ball.
We missed the playoffs, yet for the better part of the first half against Moody, we were outplaying them cause their O-line wasn't getting a push consistently. That's why I never really thought they would be a contender for a deep playoff run. |

Games I watched, at least partially.
Deshler Etowah
Deshler got a fast start, partially from Etowah making unforced errors and partially from Deshler forcing some errors. Deshler built a 22-0 lead, I believe it was, before Etowah decided to show up. I know the Goggins kid got banged up, he is probably Deshlers best player. I didn't expect them to make it this far, so they've already exceeded any expectations I had. But for their sake, I hope Goggins can get back to 100%
Cherokee County West Morgan
This was a pretty good game. Both teams played hard. I really expected Cherokee County to have a little more athleticism to separate themselves from West Morgan. That being said, they had enough. I guess I was just expecting a little more explosion. They were precise and played a solid game, just looked a little more vulnerable than I had expected.
Tuscaloosa Academy Lexington
This was just an all out battle. Both teams played their hearts out. Tuscaloosa Academy kicked a fg as time expired to win the game. I just can't see TA challenging Fyffe though. But I was really impressed with them being their first year in AHSAA. |

Watched Winston County vs Fyffe and it was a tale of 2 half?s. Fyffe is a disciplined, talented team that will wear down any team that can?t match their talent level. Winston stayed with their running game the first half and fell behind 28-6 by halftime. The second half Winston went primarily to a passing attack and that helped as they made 4 long drives into the red zone but never punched it in. That enabled them to keep the ball out of Fyffe?s hands for the most part and the game ended 35-6. Number 24 for Fyffe is the real deal running the ball.

very good description of Fyffe. Talent and discipline.
We have Aliceville this week. I watched the film of Winston County and I kind of get the impression that not for a punt return y?all beat them?
What are your overall thoughts on them?

I didn?t see that game but my understanding is that Aliceville hit three quick scores in the 4th to win it.

If memory serves me correctly, they did. I know they had a punt return for TD late and scored on the last play of the game where the QB broke contain and ran. They hit him at the one but he managed to break the plane.

I've been at all the Winston Co games (wink wink) Aliceville Game Punt Return hurt us, but the Pass interference call on the last play of the game is what killed us. The call never should have happend and if anything it should have been offensive pass interference. We still should have stopped them on the last play but didnt.
Thoughts on Aliceville: Team looks like a college team.. they did not like going against the physical WCHS offensive line and had no answer for it. They want to pass 1st and the QB can hurt you running the ball. This is the best coached Aliceville team I have seen in last 5 years.
Thoughts on Fyffe: They are the real deal, #24 one of the best RB I have seen all season. I do think Tuscaloosa Acad can hurt them passing the ball. TCAD has a pretty good defensive front that can challenge Fyffe. I think Fyffe wins in the end, but dont let it come down to a kick, TCAD Kicker is the real deal also.

I noticed they didn't care for having WC run the ball right at them. Seems like the just a couple of plays hurt WC. It almost looked like depth may have played a part in it as well. I thought WC looked well coached and comfortable in what they do. Nothing flashy just execute. quote: Originally posted by WCGuru1

This game was a battle. And the FG wasn't an ordinary FG. It was a 50 yarder, down the middle with room to spare. It would've been good from 55, and possibly 60 yards.

I knew it was a long one, but the NFHS feed didn't have any sound other than the game sounds and PA and I couldn't quite tell how long it was but I know the kid drilled it with plenty of leg to hit further. |

Unlike the first round, the second round was full of surprises (well, surprising to me). Mars Hill, Spring Garden, TA, Faith..of course, not winning but by three touchdowns over Demopolis. I picked T.R. Miller to win 4A because i felt like they were due a run, but i'm not surprised at the Handley win. I hope the 3rd round is just as good! |
