Is there anyone who disagrees with me that the hurdle penalty in high school is stupid? To me, this penalty is the equivalent of saying that it?s not fair that a player is athletic enough to hurdle someone else. I understand that this penalty is dressed up to be a ?player safety rule?, but if a player wants to take the risk of leaving their feet to make a big play happen then they should be allowed to because it would not hurt anyone but themselves. I have seen handfuls of sportcenter worthy plays be called back for the sole reason that a kid is so talented and athletic that they are able to jump over another player. What sense does that make? This is an outdated rule that needs to be changed by the NFHS.

I'm guessing that a player on the team that you pull for got flagged for hurdling?

I think a lot of penalties are wild. I come from a time where hitting a defenseless player was unheard of. Now if you don?t hit a defenseless player, they catch the ball and make a big play. The defenseless player rule works against the defender more times than none.

Celebration penalties is another. I don?t see anything wrong with celebrating and dancing as long as it ain?t taunting a player.

To your question. I think it is a rule but I don?t agree with it. It limits what the ball carrier can do to make something happen.

I've seen enough games where a ball-carrier goes up, gets flipped, lands on his head, and is injured. With the added emphasis on targeting in the last 5-10 years, there is no way the NFHS is going to reverse course on safety-related fouls.

The hurdle rule has always been there. It was at one time in college and professional football as well. Keep in mind that college and professional rules are changed based on what TV executives believe will create more viewers. That is the reason most rule changes have been more advantageous to offense.
