I know for several years there has been a group of administrators that would like to see the AHSAA and the AISA combine in a manner that would allow all of the public schools, and the private schools compete with each other during the regular season but then have separate playoff brackets. Does anyone know why this hasn't happened yet, and who is the biggest opposition to it happening?
It?s because the AISA is not an NFHS affiliate so they cannot play against NFHS members like AHSAA schools. I do not know who is in opposition but I think it is happening within five years
There is no opposition in this case to my knowledge. The AISA has applied to the NFHS and is awaiting the National Council of the NFHS to make the final decision.
They also need approval from the AHSAA's Central Board of Control. It is a process I see being completed by 2026.
That does not mean all the private schools in the AHSAA will suddenly move to the AISA. That will likely not happen. It is also unlikely we will see the private schools have a separate playoff system anytime soon. Those decisions have been discussed in the past but not enough support to get passed by the Central Board. Maybe in the future.
Remember the coaches and administrators on the Central Board make the rules. The AHSAA Director just enforces them.

That's really two different questions that you are asking.
1. Combining the AISA and AHSAA and having a separate private school playoff bracket. This was proposed a few years ago and rejected by the AISA OR 2. The AHSAA allowing crossover play and giving a lot of private schools an option of competing for a championship in the AISA, while being able to schedule local public schools in non region games.
The second proposal has been rejected many times by the AHSAA even though they allow AHSAA members to play schools in both the GISA (Georgia private school league) and MSAIS (Mississippi),
There apparently is some opposition because the state Senator from Weumpka, Troy Stubbs filed house bill 91 to try and force the AHSAA to allow cross over play.
It was similar to the bill passed a few years ago that created the Tim Tebow rule in Alabama.
For whatever reason the bill was never voted on and I didn't see any reports to why this was the case.

It did not go to a vote because under the rules of the NFHS the AISA schools can not play the AHSAA schools until the AISA is approved by the NFHS.
The AHSAA abides by the rules of the NFHS. While I do not know that is the reason for a no vote even if the state senate passed a law they still could not play until approval by the NFHS.
