Baldwin County Tigers (2-8) |
|
|
Outlook: The Tigers have the most difficult schedule in 6A this season. Playing in region one is tough enough but with non-region games against 7A Foley and 7A Mary Montgomery the Tigers will be tested early and often. Coach Davis will have a tough task ahead of him to get Baldwin County competitive in 2024. |
Baldwin County has only reached the playoffs once in the past sixteen seasons that being in 2021 under former coach Scott Rials. |

Coach Davis worked at McGill-Toolen and Gulf Shores before serving four seasons at Daphne. He spent 2017-2019 on the staff at Baldwin County, three seasons at Elberta and last year was the quarterbacks coach at Spanish Fort.

Outlook: The Leopards missed the playoffs the past three seasons. The last time that happened was in 1985. With four different coaches the past four seasons maybe they need some stability at the top. Coach Nelson has hopes of rebuilding the once mighty football program starting in 2024. |
The offense lost some starters to graduation but the defense will return all but one starter from last season. Look for this Blount team to be much improved over the the last three seasons. |
Coach Nelson told AHSFHS.org. ''Leopards look to be lead by an experienced defense and improved offense. Remaining health is a top priority as Blount competes in tough 6A region One.'' |

Gulf Shores Dolphins (15-0) |
|
|
Outlook: There is not a single person who thought there was any possibility that Gulf Shores could ever win a state championship until a couple of years ago. Well, look at the Dolphins now. They are the reigning 5A state champions and the coveted Blue Map resides on the beaches of Pleasure Island. |
Replacing Ronnie Royal will be at the top of the list of things to do before August 23rd. He was an important component in last year's title run. Kolin Wilson is back and should carry the load running the football. |
The largest task for the Dolphins will be navigating the waters of Class 6A after making the off season move up in classification. Region One has long been considered one of the toughest in the state and it just got more difficult with the loss of Robertsdale and addition of Gulf Shores. Their 16 game regular season winning streak could be in serious jeopardy with games against the likes of Choctawhatchee, Florida, Mary Montgomery and Saraland to open the season. |

McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets (5-5) |
|
|
Outlook: The Yellow Jackets missed the playoffs the past two seasons something that has not happened to them since 1998. To get back to the post season the Jackets will have to figure out a way to defeat at least one of the 'Big 4' in region one. That would be Saraland, Spanish Fort, St. Paul's and Theodore. |
The Yellow Jackets have the third most difficult schedule in 6A this season. Playing in region one is tough enough but with non-region games against 7A foes Daphne and Davidson it will be even more difficult. |
That may prove a tall task as all will be considered favorites for one of the four playoff slots in 2024. |

Outlook: WR Ryan Williams may be gone and off to Alabama but make no mistake, these Spartans are loaded with talent everywhere. They will also be playing with a huge chip on their shoulder after falling short of a state championship in 2023 by inches. |
Saraland will return five starters from the 2023 football team on offense and only three to the defense. So there be some rebuilding of the defense if the Spartans hope to make another run at a championship in 2024. The skilled players on offense are as good as any in the state. |
The non-region schedule is brutal for the Spartans in 2024. They only play two non-region opponents but those two may be the best of Class 4A and 5A in Jackson and Catholic Montgomery. |

Outlook: It took the Toro's offense a while to get going last year. In their first five games they only scored more than 14 points once in a 44-0 win over Blount. As the season progressed the offense did jell and scored 28 or more points in all but one of the last seven games. |
The Toros lost all-state players Cole McConathy and Sterling Dixon from an excellent defense. They also will be without Chandler Wilson and Javontae Walton who all graduated in the spring. |
Dual threat quarterback Shamburger will be back to lead the charges and with a year of experience will help the Toros get off to a better start to the season in 2024. The Toros return six starters from last season on offense and just three to the defense. |
Coach Chase Smith had this to say about the 2024 football season at Spanish Fort. ''Looking for a young team to step up to the challenge of Region one and 6A competition.'' |

Outlook: Last year the Saints finished with a record of 7-4 completing their fifteenth consecutive winning season. They have also reached the playoffs in each of the past fourteen seasons. The problem is that the competitive balance rules set up by the AHSAA is making a championship run more difficult for the Saints. Their semi-final run in 2022 kept them in 6A for another two years. |
As we all know 6A Region 1 is among the most difficult to navigate for any team much less one that should be in 5A. The addition of Gulf Shores to Region 1 will only make it more difficult for all the teams to grab one of the four playoffs spots going forward. |
The Saints will be experienced this fall with seven starters returning on offense and eight to the defense. Coach Barnett says they will also be counting on newcomer Will Abrams to add support to the team. Look for an improved team when the season opens in August. |
Coach Barnett had this to say about the 2024 Saints of St. Paul. ''The nucleus of this team has played a lot of football together.'' |

Outlook: Over the course of the last three seasons at Park Crossing the Thunderbirds have won only five football games and will begin this season with a new head football coach in Charles Biggers. Can he revive the program and get it back to where it was in 2016-17 when the Thunderbirds won 24 games in two seasons? |

Outlook: The Phoenix are looking forward to the move from 7A down to 6A this season. They move from one of the toughest regions in the state to one where only two of the schools even qualified for the playoffs last year (Pike Road and Wetumpka). The possibility of grabbing one of the four playoff spots for region two will be much easier in 6A than it was the last few years in 7A. |
Percy Julian has missed the playoffs the past two seasons so the first goal of this team should be to get back to the playoffs after falling short the past two years. The five wins last year were an improvement over the 1-9 season in 2022. Returning quarterback Bryson McGrew will be counted on to lead the offense once again. |

Pike Road Patriots (11-3) |

Outlook: When your leading passer and leading running back return to most any team the outlook for the upcoming season will be optimistic. Well, that's the case at Pike Road in 2024. They will need to replace 1,000 yard receiver Jordan King who graduated but return nine starters from last year including four along the line of scrimmage. |
On defense the Patriots return five starters including Braylon Outlaw who will anchor the defense from his linebacker position. |
Only three opponents on the Patriot's 2024 schedule qualified for the playoffs last season. But the non-region schedule is brutal as Pike Road will open the season on the road against 7A Prattville and Enterprise. Both are potential playoff teams. They also play Opelika and Charles Henderson later in the season. |
The Patriots should be the class of region two and host a first round playoff game come November. |

Outlook: The jump to Class 6A for the Rebels may be a little smoother than anticipated. Only one team in Region 2 won more than the Rebels (6-4) did last season. Only two of the current teams in region 2 reached the playoffs last year. While the Rebels themselves have not reached the playoffs since 2020 they will have a goal of getting back in 2024. |
While they finished 6-4 last year, the Rebels will need to improve a little to reach that mark again this season. |
The Rebels return just four starters from last year on offense and six to the defense. Several younger players will be counted on early if the Rebels hope to be competitive in 6A this season. |

Outlook: The Eagles missed the playoffs in 2023 after making a trip to the post season the three previous seasons. But they have not won a playoff games since 2017 under Andrew Zow. Their 0-10 record is the worst since 1993 so there is definitely room for improvement. |
Scott Rials becomes the sixth head football coach in the past ten seasons at Calera. Could his arrival mean the fortunes of the football program are turning around? He has been very successful in the past at building programs and the Eagle fans would like nothing better in 2024 and beyond. With the addition of Spain Park and Chelsea to Region 3 it will only get tougher to claim one of the three coveted playoff spots come November. |
It will be a rebuilding job at Calera as they will need to find replacement players for most every position on both sides of the football according to Coach Rials. |

Outlook: The Huskies tied the school record for wins in a season last year with nine. They set a record for most points scored in a season with 416. They started the season 8-0 before dropping three of their last four games. |
A difficult non-region schedule awaits the Huskies this year. They open the season on the road against McAdory. Later they host Moody and Oxford in the middle of the season. The addition of Spain Park to Region 3 will only make the region schedule more difficult. The Huskies will need to find a replacement for all-state running back Jordan Washington who graduated in the spring. |

Outlook: The Panthers are joined this year in Region 3 by Spain Park and Chelsea who both dropped down from 7A with the AHSAA realignment last December. With Helena and Benjamin Russell already in the region it will get a little crowded come November with only four playoff spots available. Once the dust settles Pelham should be in good shape to get back to the post season after falling just short in 2023. |

Outlook: The Jaguars are looking forward to the move from 7A down to 6A this season. They move from one of the toughest regions in the state to one where only two of the schools even qualified for the playoffs last year (Benjamin Russell and Helena). The prospects to grab one of the four possible playoffs spots is almost assured for the talented bunch at Spain Park in 2024. |
The Jaguars return their starting quarterback from last year in junior Brock Bradley. Look for them to be more than just a little competitive in region three and give Helena and Benjamin Russell a run for their money at the region championship. |
Spain Park will need to do some rebuilding as they return only four starters from last season on offense and just three to the defense. |

Outlook: The Panthers of Brookwood have struggled on the football field for quite some time. They finished last season with a 1-9 record and have not had a winning season since 1999. They have also only qualified for the playoffs once during this time. They are 0-5 all-time in the playoffs having never even won a playoff game. |
A new coach and a renewed outlook could bring a change to Brookwood as former head coach at Priceville, Chris Foster, takes over the helm for the Panthers in 2024. |
Coach Foster tells us they will return six starters on offense and six to the defense. |
''With a new head coach, the football team is set for an fresh new season. The coach brings new approach to the game and preparation. Players are adjusting to the coach's style, which is creating a sense of physicality and resilience. The first few games will be important to see how well the team can adapt and perform under the new system. It is always important to get off to a hot start. '' |

Chris Foster leaves Priceville after five seasons with an impressive 40-18 record. He took the team to four playoff appearances winning a playoff game each time. Coach Foster turned around a struggling football program winning eight games his first season in Priceville.
His 40 victories are the most by a head coach at Priceville and his four playoff wins are the only ones in school history. Foster is a Brookwood native and will once again be tasked with turning around a struggling football program at Brookwood.

Outlook: A 5-5 break even season last year was an improvement over the past eight years for the Falcons. They were much better on offense scoring more points than in any season since 2008. |
Only three teams in Region 4 made the playoffs last year. Only a single team won more than six games. What does that all mean for the Central Falcons? It might mean they have a shot at one of the four playoff spots available in 2024. |
The Falcons return seven players to the offense and three on the defense according to head football coach Demario Pippen. Several newcomers will be looked upon early in the season to contribute. |

Outlook: The Gardendale Rockets would prefer to forget about the 3-8 record form last year and move on to bigger and better things in the future. The offense scored more than 40 five times but they only won three of those games. |
The three victories last year were the fewest in Gardendale since the 2005 football season. The Rockets are not accustomed to losing and don't expect them to have another season like last year anytime soon. One bright spot was that they did manage to reach the playoffs for the tenth season in a row. |

Outlook: The Patriots have reached the playoffs the last twelve seasons and hope that streak will continue this year. Last year they lost their first three games to quality opponents before rebounding to win six of the next seven games. |
This season the Patriots will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Their non-region opponents finished last season with a combined record of 30-17. This year they will see John Carroll and Briarwood to open the 2024 football season and later host Mountain Brook and James Clemens. |
This will be a much more experienced squad than last season as most starters return on both sides of the football. Look for another banner year for the patriots in 2024. |
Coach Berguson told us about this year's team at Homewood. ''The Patriots started the 2023 season 0-3 with a young and inexperienced football team. They reeled off 5 impressive wins in a row to qualify for the state playoffs, losing to semifinalist Pike Road 10-9 in the 1st round. Outlook: Look out for the Tigers in 2024 as Coach Abrams brings back most of the starters from last season. The offense and defense should be much improved with all the experience returning this fall. |
It very well could be the best team at Minor in a few years. |
The Tigers from Minor have not reached the playoffs since 2020 and have finished fifth in each of the past three seasons in Region 5. So basically they were one victory away from a playoff spot each year. With a little improvement they could make that leap to the playoffs this year. |
Coach Abrams had this to say about this year's team at Minor. ''Great things are happening on Minor Parkway! This year, we will move into our new football facility that is currently in the finishing stages of construction. We are thankful for the support of our community and the new Principal, Dr. Yvette Sanders. This season the Blue Devils will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Their non-region schedule includes Leeds, Cullman, Fort Payne and Hartselle. All were playoff teams last year and all are quality football programs. |
Mortimer Jordan will count on a group of younger players to step up this fall and fill some positions on both sides of the football if they hope to continue the success of last season. |

The Herd will open the season against 5A power Ramsay and then travel to Mountain Brook before going on the road to Gardendale in a region five matchup. Parker won all three of those games last year and if they pull off the trifecta again this year it will be a great start to the 2024 football season for Coach Warren's team. |

Outlook: How do you replace a star like Cole Gamble? You don't. You just try and move on. That's exactly what the Spartans will be doing in 2024. Gamble rushed for over 2,000 yards last season and will be missed. But plenty of talent will be ready come August. |

Midseason they will host Homewood. All four opponents were playoff teams last year and all have quality football programs who won a combined 36 games last season. |

Oxford Yellow Jackets (9-3) |
|
|
Outlook: In 2024 the Yellow Jackets will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. They open the season against one of the better teams in Georgia with Central Carrollton on the road. The very next week they entertain an excellent Moody team. Their other non-region opponents are Helena and 7A Florence. Their schedule ranks among one of the more difficult in the state in 2024. |
The Jackets will welcome back seven starters from last season on offense and another seven starters back on defense. This will be a veteran squad after putting a young team on the field the past two seasons. |
Quarterback Mason Mims will lead the charges on offense while the defense will be headed up by linebacker Kennan Britt. Look for another great season in Oxford from the Yellow Jackets. |
Coach Adams tells us the team has ''A lot of experience returning from a strong 2023 season.'' |

Outlook: Well, the Rush Propst saga is finally over after just one season. The experiment basically ended as his last three head coaching jobs. A lot of chaos and broken dreams. Hopefully the Panthers can use the lessons they learned from last season and move on to 2024. |
The Panthers will have their fourth head coach in as many seasons with Nick Gentry taking over the reins this fall. In 2024 the Panthers will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. They will take on Pelham, Coosa Christian, Central Clay County and Southside Gadsden. |

Nick Gentry was named the next head football coach at Pell City following Rush Propst's resignation. Pinson Valley Indians (4-6) |
|
|
Outlook: Pinson Valley has qualified for the playoffs every season since 2009 but has slipped a bit since their back-to-back championship season of 2017-18 and 2020. They are on their fourth head coach since then and while they are competitive in 6A they are not the championship caliber team of years gone by. Can they recapture those glory days once again? First year head coach James Thompson hopes he has a winning formula for the Indians in 2024. |
The Indians have the second most difficult schedule in 6A this season. Playing in region six is tough enough but with non-region games against 7A Central Phenix City, 7A Hewitt-Trussville, Gardendale and Hueytown the schedule will be tougher than ever. In 2024 the Indians will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. |

Outlook: Since 2012 the Mounties have reached the playoffs five times in twelve seasons. The other seven years they finished fifth in their region. So they missed making twelve consecutive trips to the post season by one game in those seasons. |
Playing in the same region with Clay-Chalkville, Mountain Brook, Oxford and Pinson Valley makes it very difficult to claim one of those elusive four playoff spots that are available each season. |

Even with the addition of Jasper to Region 7 this season the Eagles should be able to capture one of the four playoff spots available. |
Athens returns five starters from last season on offense and four on defense. They will be led by quarterback Brogan Gross who has the experience to be very effective. |
Coach Gross had this to say about the Golden Eagles in 2024. ''With our region, it is always a tough battle from week to week with great rivalries that have great environments for high school football. We have an experienced offensive line and a returning 3 year starter at QB. Our defense improved week to week last season and expect to continue that growth throughout the 2024 season. '' |

Decatur will return just three starters from last season to the offense but will have seven back on defense. Coach Ritter, in his first year at Decatur, will be counting on a number of younger players to step up and fill some positions especially on offense. |
Coach Ritter told us ''The 2024 team will be young and inexperienced but have a talented Sophomores class that will need to grow up quickly. Outlook: Hartselle has long been a powerhouse when high school football is discussed in north Alabama. Over the past 18 seasons they have made a trip to the playoffs 17 times winning a state championship in 2011. Coach Moore may have left for Opelika but the Tigers will still be a team to be reckoned with in 6A for some time to come. |
The Tigers can look back on last season and wonder what if? Injuries late in the season slowed down what could have been a championship season in Hartselle. Noah Lee came in for injured QB Landon Blackwood and played well for the Tigers last season. |
Ri Fletcher graduated in May but enough talent will return for the Tigers to make another deep playoff run in 2024. Other backs like Jayden Morris and Jaheim Pruitt are expected to fill that role. |

Muscle Shoals Trojans (11-1) |

|
Outlook: The Trojans will need to find replacements for graduated all-state players like DB Xavier Johnson, WR Jamir Goodloe and ATH Cole Woods. The non-region schedule is brutal with Gadsden City, 7A Florence and 7A Austin on the slate. In Region 7 they will have to contend with Hartselle, Athens and Cullman for the region crown something they won in 2023. |
The Muscle Shoals football team has qualified for the playoffs in each of the past fifteen seasons. Back-to-back eleven win seasons and five playoff victories are great but the Trojans would like to get back to the Super 7 something they have not done since 2013. Could this be their year? |
The Trojans return six starters from last year's squad to the offense and another six on defense. |
Coach Basden shared his thoughts on this year's team. ''Great core group of returning starters, young in spots but, look for them to be great players in the future.'' |

Coach Patterson is very optimistic about the 2024 Bucks. He told AHSFHS.org ''Lot of experience back on Defense, and at the skill positions offensively. Fort Payne Wildcats (7-5) |
|
|
Outlook: Coach Elmore has to be excited about the prospects for the 2024 version of his Wildcats from Ft. Payne. They return one of the best quarterbacks in the state with Dax Varnadore who threw for nearly 3,000 yards last season. |
The offense was great last season but the defense will need some improvement if the Wildcats have any hope of getting past the second round of the playoffs in 2024. The offense scored 449 points but the defense allowed 362 including 56 to Scottsboro, 63 to Gadsden City and 49 to Lee Huntsville. All were losing efforts for the Wildcats. |
This season the Wildcats will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. So, this year will not be a cakewalk by any stretch of the imagination. Their non-region opponents include Scottsboro, Guntersville, Mortimer Jordan and Pelham. Those schools combined for a 33-13 record last year. |
Coach Elmore had this to say about his Wildcats in 2024. ''Honorable Mention All State QB Dax Varnadore returns for his senior season after a 3,000 yard junior season with only 2 INT's. Carter Tinker, Connor Kinsley, and Brannon Oliver are all 3 year starters that look to have big senior seasons. 8 starters back on Offense, 5 starters back on defense, and all key specialists back have us cautiously optimistic for the 2024 season.'' |

Gadsden City Titans (9-4) |
|
|
Outlook: After missing the playoffs for five straight seasons the Titans have reached the post season the past two years under the direction of head coach Ali Smith. Their four losses last year were to Hewitt-Trussville, Hartselle, Hillcrest and Parker. All were excellent teams. |
Coach Smith has increased the team's win total every season since his arrival in 2019. Actually by two wins each season. This year's schedule will once again be no cakewalk as the Titans will face eight teams that qualified for the playoffs in 2023. A much anticipated game on October 25th will be a first ever matchup between the Titans and nearby Southside. This could be one of the better rivalries in the making for years to come. |
The Titans return most everyone on offense but lost most of their starters on defense to graduation. They will have 24 seniors on the team so that experience and leadership will be valuable once the season begins. Coach Smith said at media days his main goal prior to that first game against Muscle Shoals is to get the right players in the right positions which will give them the best production. |
A difficult schedule may not produce more wins but the team will be ready to make a playoff run come November. |
