Alma Bryant Hurricanes (2-8) |
|
|
Outlook: The Hurricanes have not won five games in any season since 2000. Could this be the year Coach Sessions gets Alma Bryant back to that old form? |
Alma Bryant will return six starters on offense and six on defense. They will rely of a few younger athletes to fill in the gaps and get that much needed experience early in the season. The Hurricanes open the season on the road at Baker and then host Fairhope on September 6th. |
Coach Sessions stated '' We are excited about the 2024 Season. Our team has worked extremely hard and we can see the difference in the athleticism in our team.'' |

Outlook: The eight wins last year were the most at Baker since 2014 so things appear to be looking up for the Hornets. |
The loss of Josh Flowers at QB to graduation will be difficult to replace. The Hornets also lost thousand yard rusher Roderick Clark to graduation. They will also be without their leading receiver Bryce Cain who graduated. |
So the Hornets need to basically replace their entire offensive production. They return just three players on offense and five on defense in 2024. |

Outlook: The Pirates suffered through their first losing season since 2016 but have hopes of bouncing back in 2024. Fairhope also missed a playoff berth for the first time since 2016. |
In 2024 the Pirates will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Their four non-region opponents won 36 combined games Spanish Fort: 9, Choctawhatchee: 10, Pensacola Catholic: 11 and Briarwood: 6 |

Outlook: Foley finished a disappointing 5-5 last season and missed the playoffs. A very weak non-region schedule may produce more victories but will do little to prepare the team for the playoffs if they get there. |
An experienced returning quarterback should help the offense but the loss of three key players on offense will leave voids that need to be filled. Kolton Nero and Perry Thompson will be difficult to replace. |

Outlook: Coach Golson and his 2023 Vikings set records last year and produced one of the best teams in Semmes ever possibly. When you consider they were 0-10 just three years ago it is quite an accomplishment. |
The loss of Jared Hollis at QB will be difficult to replace for the Vikings. Hollins accounted for more than 5,500 total yards and 62 touchdowns the past two seasons. They will also be without their leading receiver James Bolton who graduated. |
Coach Golson will be counting on Shondell Harris to fill some very big shoes at quarterback after making the move from his safety position. |

Robertsdale Golden Bears (0-10) |
|
|
Outlook: The Bears have never been a dominate force of the football field but back-to-back 0-10 seasons are rock bottom in Robertsdale. |
A new coaching staff and a renewed outlook will hopefully give the fans something to cheer about very soon. Population growth in the area may assist them in their efforts as most of the land south of the town has been claimed and more folks will be moving to the area in the coming years. They have nowhere to go but up. |
The Bears return five starters from last year to the offense and four on defense. So Coach Cris Bell will need to fill a bunch of positions early this fall to give the Bears a chance at turning around a struggling football program. They do have a group of newcomers they think will be able to help right away this season. He is very optimistic and energetic about the possibilities. |
Coach Bell said about his Golden Bears ''Much improvement is needed in all 3 phases of the game. If we can establish the foundation of who we want to be as a program - physical, tough minded, tenacious - we have a shot. A complete overhaul both physically and mentally is needed, and to this point, our kids are committed to making the changes necessary to change outcomes. Will be fun to watch the metamorphosis.'' |

Outlook: The Tigers have seen their last five seasons come to an end against either Central PC or Thompson in the playoffs. They have won at least nine games in seven straight seasons. Could this be the year they dethrone Central for that coveted region crown? |
Nine consecutive winning seasons for the Tigers from Auburn. Nineteen of the last twenty years have produced a winning record. They have also reached the playoffs in each of the past twenty-three seasons. They have not lost in the first round since 2014 so they are holding up the honor of region 2 quite well. |
The Tigers will return six starters from last year's defense and seven to the offense including all but one offensive lineman. |
Coach Etheredge had this to say about the 2024 Auburn High Tigers. ''Gonna be a great year with starting QB Jackson Kilgore returning along with RB Omar Mabson, WR/ATH Peyton Plott and 4 starting OL Hugh Bodiford, Aidan Platt, Clem Womack, and Trenton Pritchett. Carver Montgomery Wolverines (7-4) |
|
|
Outlook: This is not your old Carver Wolverine team. This squad could be the team that shocks the state in 2024. Talent is everywhere at the skilled positions with the returning starters and the transfers over from Lanier. |
With the addition of Anthony Rogers in the backfield the only question on offense will be along the line of scrimmage. If Coach Carr can fill those spots successfully the Wolverines will be in the playoffs in what could be the toughest region in the state. |
Coach Carr tells us he has six starters returning on offense and another six on defense but with the addition of the players from Lanier they should have an entire lineup of starters back or very close to it. This team will be stacked make no mistake about it. The only question will be can Coach Carr bring them together as a team? If so they will be a force to be reckoned with in 7A. |
Coach Carr told us ''Carver and Lanier high schools have merged. We have 17 players with Division 1 offers.'' |

Outlook: A losing season at Hoover is something that has not happened since 1998 long before any of the current players were even born. It is totally unacceptable in Hoover by standards that were set many years ago. |
So what do they do to right the ship? Well first off they went out and hired Drew Gilmer who directed Clay-Chalkville to a perfect 14-0 record and the 6A state championship last season. |
The talent pool seems to have dwindled a little since the glory days for the Bucs but if any coach can quickly turn this thing around it will be Drew Gilmer. The defense will be much improved with linebackers Trey Sanders and Cam Torbor leading the way. The offense will be led by transfer QB Mac Beason from Gardendale. |

2024 Coaching Change
|
Drew Gilmer leaves Clay-Chalkville after seven very successful seasons. His 2021 and 2023 teams finished with undefeated seasons and a state championship. Each of his teams qualified for the playoffs and all but one (2022) reached the third round of the playoffs. His 81-12 record is nothing short of amazing in his first eight seasons as a head football coach.

Outlook: So will the move from region 2 to region 3 help the Lions or do they continue the recent trend of being a middle of the pack football program? It is no picnic playing in either region but region 3 is loaded with playoff quality teams and only four can make the post season. |
The Lions return four starters to the offense and six on defense in 2024. One key will be to find starters along the offensive line early in the season. With a quality starter at quarterback and two wide receivers if the offensive line jells the offense could be in good shape. |

Outlook: Anything less than a state championship in Thompson has become something of a disappointment for the Warriors. They missed out on winning their fifth consecutive title in 2023 but rest assured they will be back trying to start a new streak in 2024. |
The Warriors will be without thousand yard rusher AJ Green who graduated in the spring. They will return only three players on offense including QB Trent Seaborn. The Warriors will also return four starters to the defense. |
Hosting Grayson, Georgia should give us a good indication of just what to expect from the latest version of the Warriors. Grayson lost a lot of talent to graduation so look for this to be a competitive contest to start the season. |
Coach Freeman said about this year's team. ''Only seven starters back off last years team. Very young and inexperienced in key areas.'' |

Tuscaloosa County Wildcats (5-5) |
|
|
Outlook: The problem at Tuscaloosa County is simple. They compete in a very difficult region in the state's highest classification. The Wildcats qualified for the playoffs every year between 1996-2013 but have not reached the post seasons since. |
They have seen five coaches come and go during that time and will have new leadership in 2024 with Miles Holcomb moving over after a successful season at Southside Gadsden. |

2024 Coaching Change
|
Miles Holcomb leaves Southside Gadsden after three seasons leading the Panthers. His 2023 football team finished 8-3 and tied for the region championship with Moody and Leeds. Before taking over at Southside in 2021, Holcomb served as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Hoover and one year as offensive coordinator at Alpharetta High School in Georgia during the 2020 season.
Holcomb graduated from Shorter University and landed his first head coaching job at Crossville for two seasons.

Outlook: The loss of John Paul Head at QB to graduation will be difficult to replace for the Rebels. |
In 2024 the Rebels will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Their first five games are against Carver, Auburn, Hewitt-Trussville, Hillcrest and Thompson. That is a brutal schedule and the toughest stretch for any team in the state. |
Coach Evans told us ''We will have a quality football team, but also the toughest schedule in the state. We have arguably 6 of the Top 10 Teams in the state on our schedule and a much improved Carver Team loaded with prospects. If we can just get in the playoffs out of our region and be healthy at the end of the year, we'll be a tough out. Just like the last 2 years.'' |

Albertville Aggies (0-10) |
|
|
Outlook: The Aggies in Albertville have no where to go but up in 2024. They have won just four games in as many seasons but hopes are high that everything will start to change for second year coach Bert Browne this season. |
The returning group of athletes will be better than in the past few seasons and the product on the field should be much better in Browne's second season at the helm of the Aggies. They return seven starters to the offense including freshman quarterback CJ Zuniga and Hunter Smith. On defense the Aggies welcome back six players who started at least some games this past season. |
Coach Browne told AHSFHS.org ''Look for a lot of up and coming talent who got to make some starts last year as freshman and sophomores to make the leap in a permanent starting role. Two-way starters such as Hunter Smith, Djovani JeanPierre, Cooper Scott, and Des Revolte will be the heartbeat of the team''. |

Outlook: The Black Bears have reached the playoffs eight of the past nine seasons and this year should be no different. Region four remains the same as the past two years where Austin finished either first or second both seasons. Look for them to be at or near the top again when November rolls around. |
They return five starters on offense plus the kicker but just three return form last season's defense. Coach Perkins will start a new group of players on defense but has players he believes can fill the void left by graduation. |
Coach Perkins told us ''We return a lot of production in the skill positions offensively with some size on the offensive line, but will be inexperienced defensively. This team has a lot of potential and will improve tremendously as we gain experience and find our identity.'' |

This season the Falcons can accomplish something no other team at Florence has ever done. If they are able to reach the playoffs it will mark the fourth consecutive season for the Falcons something they have never done previously. |
The Falcons return five starters from last season to the offense and another eight on defense. Coach Morson will also be counting on a few newcomers to contribute as the season progresses. He told us ''We have a great group of young men working really hard on the field and in the classroom!'' |
