2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pell City completed the 2015 season with a 4-7 record. With their 2-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region three, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Pell City's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Spanish Fort by a score of 24-10. Pell City took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2010. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The Panthers had some tough luck last season as four of their seven losses were by less than eight points. Pell City was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.5 points a game. Since 2010, Pell City has gone a combined 33-31. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 6A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Pell City has managed to compile a record of 126-139. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 6A and 201st in the AHSAA. Brooks Dampeer will not return to Pell City for the 2016 football season. After three seasons at the school, Dampeer's teams finished with a 16-16 overall record including a couple of first round playoff losses the past two years. Head football coach Keith Etheredge resigned his position at Leeds in February to accept the same position at Pell City. He led the Green Wave to four state championships in his ten seasons with the program including the last two. Etheredge leaves behind a football program on top of Class 4A. His overall record at Leeds stands at 107-34 and his playoff record was 35-6 on the field. His teams won six region championships and never finished worse than third. He arrives at a Pell City program that has won only 15 playoff games in the history of the school. Coach Etheredge's overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 107-34 (75.9%). His 107 wins rank 46th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Etheredge's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won six region championships. He has a 33-8 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Etheredge won four state championships prior to arriving at Pell City, the last coming in 2015 at Leeds. The Pell City Panthers will play in Class 6A region seven during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 6A but move from region three over to region seven. With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season. Coach Etheredge arrives with high expectations for the 2016 season. His team at Leeds won more playoff games last year than the Panthers have won in the past 25 seasons combined. The Panthers open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Childersburg on Friday, August 26 at John Cox Stadium. Last year the Childersburg Tigers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 4A region three. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Lincoln by a score of 44-13. Pell City and Childersburg have met a total of 42 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 22-18-2 record against the Tigers. They last met in 1995 with Childersburg winning by a score of 24-14. College prospects include: Kent Foster (6-4, 305) offensive guard, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
