The History of High School Football in Alabama

Welcome to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society. Our goal is to chronicle a complete history of high school football in the state of Alabama. The most daunting task is to compile a team by team record of scores for every game ever played within the state. We also will provide other important information including coaching records, state wide polls, state championship summaries, region and area records and so much more.

If you can provide accurate scores or any other information related to our efforts we encourage you to contact us.

News

A new section has been started to document the history of high school football. We call it History Tidbits. You will find these short articles to the left of this message. AHSFHS.org will strive to produce these moments in history that will contain information about coaches, players, teams, games and dates that are an important part of the game. If you have something of interest pertaining to the history of football please feel free to submit it.

A.I.S.A. schools have been added to AHSFHS.org. An initial 71 schools were added to the website that belonged to the AISA. If you are able to assist us with completing details or have a source for game scores, join us in the forums to submit information. Other Private and Independent schools will be added as more research is completed.

We have begun documenting state team records. This is a beginning and more records will be added to the lists as they become available. You can find the Alabama State Records in the column to the left or HERE.

Can you help us find a missing coach? We have put together a list of missing coaches 1984-2007. Some are as recent as this year. If you can help us out check the list and join us in the forums. The list is HERE.

The Forums are the place to get involved. Join us there to discuss the history of the sport and to submit research.

Visit our How to help link if you have any interest in assisting us. We are also interested in any stories about the history of football in Alabama. If you have an article or know a good story pertaining to the history of high school football why not send it to us.

Sources

We do not guarantee our information to be 100% accurate. We rely on many sources some of which were not completely reliable the further we go back in time. Many people have contributed to compiling the scores from various newspapers, yearbooks and other sources.

Using This Information

Disclaimer

We hope you will find the site useful. If you would like to use this information in any way, we respectfully request that you refer to AHSFHS.org as your source.

This will help in getting the word out about the project and encourage others to join the efforts. This will also assist in providing the most accurate information possible.

Coaches Project

The Coaches Project is beginning to take shape nicely. Currently 158 coaches have been documented with at least 100 wins. There are many others that will be discovered in the future with the assistance of visitors to the site and research. Glenn Daniel heads the list with 302 wins having coached at Pine Hill and Luverne beginning in 1947. Coach Daniel retired after the 1992 season. Waldon Tucker, with 281 wins, heads the list for active coaches and Danny Horn leads in winning percentage with a stellar 83.9% at Clay County.

Where We Are

We currently have records for almost 600 teams. Many of the teams are nearing completion but we are still in need of coaches, game dates and locations. The website is changing almost daily with new research being uploaded all the time. Our hope is you will visit often to view the progress of the site.

Tales from Alabama Prep Football

Ron Ingram and Rubin Grant have covered High School football in Alabama for many years and have produced a great book on the sport. A must read for every high school football fan. The book If you haven't read it get a copy today. It was during high school that players such as Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan, Bobby Bowden, Bart Starr, John Hannah, Kenny Stabler, Pat Trammell, Terrell "T.O." Owens, and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams-to name but a few-began their ascent to stardom.

Another good book on HS Football in the state is the Complete History of DeKalb County/ Ft Payne Wildcats Football. Larry Hancock did much of the research and put the book together. Copies are available through the school.

Increased awareness about this site will help us accomplish our goal.

The Beginning

The game of American football as played today by high school, college, and professional teams grew out of rugby-style football which in the mid-1870s replaced a largely kicking game known as association football. Although initially played on village greens and on college fields, the first intercollegiate game took place on 6 November 1869 when Rutgers defeated Princeton 6-4 in a soccer-style game. Five years later, Montreal's McGill University playing at Harvard introduced rugby football, which would be rapidly adopted by eastern teams.   *Answers.com
