2016 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sumter Academy finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 0-9 record. The Eagles lost as many games as in any season since 1995. The defense allowed a team record 431 points last season. The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Sumter Academy has gone a combined 29-38. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Sumter Academy has managed to compile a record of 127-144. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class A and 24th in the AISA. Glen Sanders leaves Sumter Academy after four seasons with a record of 20-13 including 1-3 in the playoffs. Joe Nettles is the most traveled man in the high school coaching ranks in Alabama. Sumter Academy will be his 17th job as a head football coach. His last four jobs lasted exactly one season. Coach Nettles' overall record as a head football coach in season stands at 251-191 -4 (56.8%). His 251 wins rank 1st among active coaches in the AISA. Over the course of his career, Coach Nettles' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty times and won three region championships. Coach Nettles won two state championships prior to arriving at Sumter Academy, the last coming in 1980 at Patrician Academy. The Sumter Academy Eagles will play in Class A region two during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Eagles remain in A but move from region one over to region two. The Eagles enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 11 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Sumter Academy will be to simply win some games. The Eagles open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Lowndes Academy on Friday, August 26 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Lowndes Academy Rebels finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class A region one. The Rebels closed out the regular season with a loss to Autauga Academy by a score of 55-32. Sumter Academy and Lowndes Academy have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 5-5-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2015 with Lowndes Academy winning by a score of 61-22. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
