David Powell graduated from Midfield High School and Jacksonville State.
In 1994 Powell accepted the head coaching position at McAdory High School near Birmingham, Alabama. Powell took over from departing coach Bob Smith.
In 2012, McAdory finished 14-1 and lost only to Spanish Fort 45-14 in the state championship game. The 14 wins are the most in school history and the Super Six trip was also a first for McAdory High School.
Coach Powell enters his 26th season as head coach of the Yellow Jackets and is hopeful his team can make it back to the Super Seven championship game in 2019.
His overall football coaching record was 220-76 in twenty-five seasons at the helm at McAdory. Powells teams qualified for the playoffs following every season except his third at the school. His teams won eleven region championships along the way.
He moved to Sumiton Christian in 2019 as the head football coach.
His playoff record is 24-26. He also became a successful baseball coach over the years at McAdory winning the 1995 state championship.
