Marengo completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region one, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Marengo's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Brantley by a score of 55-38. Since 2010, Marengo has gone a combined 31-44. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marengo has managed to compile a record of 135-132. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 1A and 177th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Eberne Myrthil who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 19-14 over the past three seasons at Marengo. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Myrthil. Coach Myrthil's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 26-27 (49.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Myrthil's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Marengo Panthers will play in Class 1A region one during the 2017 season. The Panthers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. Marengo simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 58 students, the Panthers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. Junior Alphonzo Lewis returns after rushing for 550 yards on 64 carries and scoring 7 touchdowns. He will be joined by Senior Calvin Ferguson who rushed for 396 yards on 54 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. Junior Roosevelt Thompson returns after rushing for 452 yards on 50 carries and scoring 6 touchdowns. Senior Deangelos Crispin also returns after catching 17 passes for 377 yards and 2 touchdowns. The defense returns Sophomore tackle Ronald Bouler who got in on 7 sacks for 54 yards in losses along with teammate Senior DE Johnny Kennedy who registered 7 sacks for 52 yards in losses last season. The Panthers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Choctaw County on Friday, September 1 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Choctaw County Tigers finished with an overall record of 0-9 and in seventh place in Class 2A region one. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Linden by a score of 68-0. Marengo and Choctaw County have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 5-2-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2016 with Marengo winning by a score of 38-0. Marengo returns 1A All-State Senior linebacker DeAngelos Crispin.
