2017 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Midfield finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-6 record. Last year Midfield just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region four with a 2-4 region record. Midfield took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2010. The Patriots lost as many games as in any season since 2010. Midfield struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.7 points a game. Since 2010, Midfield has gone a combined 37-37. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Midfield has managed to compile a record of 174-111. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 3A and 81st in the AHSAA. The Patriots are led by head coach Rod Isaac who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 35-29 over the past six seasons at Midfield. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won one region crown with Coach Isaac. Coach Isaac's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 35-29 (54.7%). The Midfield Patriots will play in Class 3A region four during the 2017 season. The Patriots have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 62-43 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 3A and 26th in the AHSAA. With a little luck and some improvement, the Patriots could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season. Midfield came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Patriots open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Wenonah on Thursday, August 31 at Winfred E. Jackson Stadium. Last year the Wenonah Dragons finished with an overall record of 11-3 and in second place in Class 5A region five. The Dragons lost in the Class 5A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Beauregard. They final score was 33-13 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. Midfield and Wenonah have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 4-14-0 record against the Dragons. They last met in 2016 with Wenonah winning by a score of 48-0. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
