2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Southeastern finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Southeastern finished seventh in Class 1A region seven with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. No team at Southeastern ever won more games in a season than the two victories last year. The 240 points scored by the Mustangs last year were a team record in a single season. The Mustangs have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Mustangs have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. Southeastern struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.9 points a game. The Mustangs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Southeastern is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only five seasons. They have managed a record of 6-42 over the past five years. The Mustangs are led by head coach Michael Burkett who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-25 over the past three seasons at Southeastern. The Mustangs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Burkett. Coach Burkett's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 5-25 (16.7%). The Southeastern Mustangs will play in Class 1A region seven during the 2017 season. The Mustangs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 59-53 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 1A and 125th in the AHSAA. This season, the Mustangs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. The Mustangs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Appalachian on Thursday, August 24 at Eagles Stadium. Last year the Appalachian Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in seventh place in Class 1A region four. Southeastern and Appalachian have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 5-6-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2016 with Appalachian winning by a score of 34-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
