2017 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Straughn completed the 2016 season with a 4-6 record. With their 3-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region two, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Straughn's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Mobile Christian by a score of 21-7. Since 2010, Straughn has gone a combined 54-28. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Straughn has managed to compile a record of 175-118. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 3A and 95th in the AHSAA. Chris Wilson leaves Starughn after only two seasons. He led the team to 5-6 and 4-6 records and went 1-2 in the playoffs. He has accepted the head coaching job at Mary Montgomery. The Covington County Board of Education named John Higgins as the new head coach for 2017 football season. Higgins has been an assistant coach for the Tigers the past two years. His previous head coaching experience was two seasons at Dallas County in 2007 and 2008. Higgins led Dallas County to a 5-15 record during his two years. Coach Higgins' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 5-15 (25.0%). The Straughn Tigers will play in Class 3A region two during the 2017 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season. They have managed to qualify for the playoffs every year since 2007 and hopes are high to extend that streak. The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Brantley on Friday, September 1 at Brantley Field. Last year the Brantley Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in second place in Class 1A region two. The Bulldogs lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Maplesville by a score of 42-7. Straughn and Brantley have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 5-9-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2016 with Straughn winning by a score of 49-48. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
