2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Waterloo completed the 2016 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Waterloo just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region eight with a 2-4 region record. The Cougars improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2008. The Cougars won as many games as in any season since 2008. The Cougars have not qualified for the playoffs since the 1992 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history. Since 2010, the Waterloo football program has struggled with a record of 10-60. Over the past 15 seasons, Waterloo has not won much with a record of 31-111. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 1A and 371st in the AHSAA. The Cougars have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. The Cougars are led by head coach Brad Palmer who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 6-24 over the past three seasons at Waterloo. The Cougars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Palmer. Coach Palmer's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 6-24 (20.0%). The Waterloo Cougars will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2017 season. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. With a little luck and some improvement, the Cougars could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season. Waterloo has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 1992 but hope to return to the post season this year. The Cougars open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Alabama School Deaf on Friday, August 25. Last year the Alabama School Deaf Silent Warriors finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in place in Class region three. The Silent Warriors closed out the regular season with a loss to Gaylesville by a score of 42-6. Waterloo and Alabama School Deaf have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 3-1-0 record against the Silent Warriors. They last met in 2016 with Waterloo winning by a score of 40-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
