2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Holy Spirit finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Holy Spirit finished sixth in Class 1A region five with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Saints won as many games as in any season since 2010. The Saints have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Holy Spirit averaged scoring just 12.5 points a game. The Saints also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 40.7 points a game. The Saints would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Holy Spirit football program has struggled with a record of 10-59. Over the past 13 seasons, Holy Spirit has not won much with a record of 45-86. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 1A and 324th in the AHSAA. The Saints have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2008. Jamie Griffin leaves Holy Spirit after three seasons with a 3-27 record. Mark Cochran will lead Holy Spirit into the 2017 football season. The Saints are averaging only a single win over the past six seasons. They start the 2017 season with their sixth different head coach in the past ten seasons. The Holy Spirit Saints will play in Class 1A region five during the 2017 season. The Saints have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-50 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 1A and 71st in the AHSAA. The Saints enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. It will be an uphill battle for the Saints if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Holy Spirit will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Saints open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Fruitdale on Friday, August 25 at Arthur Howington Field. Last year the Fruitdale Pirates finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region one. Holy Spirit and Fruitdale have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Saints have a 2-0-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2016 with Holy Spirit winning by a score of 7-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
