 2022 Preview 


       Excel completed the 2021 season with a 6-4 record. Last year Excel just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region one with a 2-4 region record.

       The Panthers improved in 2021 with their first winning season since 2013. The Panthers won as many games as in any season since 2009. The Panthers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Since 2010, Excel has gone a combined 39-80. Their 32.8% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Excel has managed to compile a record of 115-144. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 3A and 244th in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Jason Phillips who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-4 record in his first season at Excel. The Panthers saw improvement from a 2-7 record the season before coach Phillips arrived. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Phillips.

       Coach Phillips' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 6-4 (60.0%).

       The Excel Panthers will play in Class 3A region one during the 2022 season.

       Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Unfortunately, Excel finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. Excel has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2009 but hope to return to the post season this year.

       The Panthers open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent B.C. Rain on Friday, August 19 at Panther Stadium. Last year the B.C. Rain Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fourth place in Class 5A region one. The Red Raiders lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Demopolis by a score of 49-6.

       Excel and B.C. Rain have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-1-0 record against the Red Raiders. They last met in with

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
