 2023 Preview 


       Austin completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. Last year Austin captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-1 record. Austin's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Vestavia Hills by a score of 52-10.

       Since 2010, Austin has gone a combined 90-57. Their 61.2% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Austin has managed to compile a record of 143-131. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 7A and 172nd in the AHSAA.




       The Black Bears are led by head coach Jeremy Perkins who is entering his fourteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 90-57 over the past thirteen seasons at Austin. Under his direction the Black Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Perkins.

       If Austin can win ten games this season, Coach Perkins will reach the 100 win milestone.

       The Black Bears have not won a playoff game since 2017. This could be the year they break the jinx against region three in the post season.

       The Black Bears are considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

      Junior Gavin Fuqua will be back this season at running back after rushing for 771 yards and 9 TDs in 2022.

       The Black Bears open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Hartselle on Friday, August 25 at Austin Football Field. Last year the Hartselle Tigers finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 6A region seven. The Tigers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 6A playoffs to Mountain Brook by a score of 49-30.

       Austin and Hartselle have met a total of 57 times on the football field. The Black Bears have a 24-32-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Hartselle winning by a score of 45-17.

       Austin lost 7A All-State  linebacker Druce Clarke to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

The Super 6 State Championships began in 1996. Since then all title games were played at Legion Field in Birmingham until 2009.
