 2023 Preview 


       Danville finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region seven, the Hawks earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Danville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Mars Hill by a score of 62-7.

       It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Hawks qualified for the playoffs. The Hawks last playoff victory came during the 1994 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Danville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Hawks want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.8 points a game.

       Since 2010, Danville has gone a combined 40-92. Their 30.3% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Danville has not won much with a record of 77-177. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 3A and 352nd in the AHSAA.




       The Hawks are led by head coach Andro Williams who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-13 over the past two seasons at Danville. Under his direction the Hawks have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Williams. His 132 wins rank 43rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Williams' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and won six region championships.

       The Hawks will once again be a very young team in 2023. They actually have no seniors on this years squad so youth will carry the load if Danville hopes to reach the playoffs again this season.

       The Hawks could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement.

       The Hawks open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Lawrence County on Friday, August 25 at Smith-Owens Stadium. Last year the Lawrence County Red Devils finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 5A region eight. The Red Devils ended last season on a positive note with a win over Wilson by a score of 28-27 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Danville and Lawrence County have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Hawks have a 4-8-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2022 with Lawrence County winning by a score of 24-6.

       Danville lost 3A All-State  defensive back Gage Taylor to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
